Job description

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is internationally recognised for its learning, teaching, and research excellence. The Faculty comprises nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and several world-class research institutes and Centres. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines and a professional degree in Pharmacy.

The Department of Earth Sciences offers degree programmes in Applied Geology and Environmental & Water Sciences. The successful candidate will join the Applied Geology section of the department, adding expertise in Structural Geology to complement and extend existing expertise in Applied Geology.

Key Responsibility Areas:
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in areas of economic geology, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, and petroleum geology.
  • Planning and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate field work and administration of modules.
  • Service delivery at departmental level commensurate with experience.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications related to structural geology.
  • Participation in community engagement and outreach.
  • Supervising research projects of undergraduate and postgraduate students commensurate with level of appointment.
Minimum Requirements for Senior Lecturer:
  • PhD in earth sciences related to structural geology.
  • Proven record of teaching in the earth sciences or a closely related field commensurate with level of appointment.
  • Experience of successful postgraduate research supervision.
  • Proven record of securing research funding from external sources.
  • A track record of publications in international peer-reviewed accredited journals in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment.
  • Experience in departmental academic governance and curriculum development would be an advantage.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English.
Minimum Requirements for Lecturer:
  • MSc degree in earth science or related to structural geology; a PhD in a closely related field would be an advantage.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in structural geology.
  • Experience in supervision of postgraduate student projects will be an added advantage.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed accredited journal publications.
  • A candidate with an MSc degree must be registered for doctoral studies with a detailed plan for completion.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English.
