Job summary

The University of the Free State invites applications for a Senior Lecturer in Entomology, Invertebrates and Genetics in the Department of Zoology and Entomology. This permanent, junior management role contributes to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervises Masters and PhD students, and advances research output.

The successful candidate will develop curricula, publish in peer-reviewed journals, engage with the community, and participate in administration.

Qualifications

• PhD in Zoology with Entomology/Invertebrates specialization.
• Proven teaching experience in higher education.
• Proven supervision experience for MSc/PhD students.
• Proven papers/posters at national conferences.
• NRF rating (submitted) or potential to obtain one.

Responsibilities

Description

Duties and responsibilities:

• Teach undergraduate modules in Entomology, invertebrates and genetics, and postgraduate modules in the department.
• Provide supervision to postgraduate students (Honours, Masters, and Doctoral levels).
• Publish research outputs in accredited national and international peer-reviewed journals.
• Contribute to curriculum development within the department.
• Perform general administration duties.
• Take part in the community engagement activities.

Inherent requirements:

• PhD on NQF Level 10 in Zoology with specialization in Entomology/ Invertebrates.
• Proven teaching experience in Higher Education.
• Proven experience in supervision of graduated MSc students.
• Proven experience in the presentation of papers/posters at national scholarly conferences.
• Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in Zoology and Entomology fields.
• A proven research record of relevant publications in a national and international accredited journal.
• An NRF rating (submitted) or demonstrated potential for obtaining an NRF rating.

Recommendations:

• Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education level.
• Active involvement in Zoological and/ or Entomology research.
• Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in teaching Entomology and Zoological sciences at tertiary level.
• Member of or registration at a professional scholarly society or committee.
• Demonstrated experience in field-based research.
