DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS – AFRICAN TAX INSTITUTE

SENIOR LECTURER

In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the following vacancy.

The African Tax Institute in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences is looking for someone who can further that competitive advantage, and, therefore, is able to bring something innovative to the institute, as well as someone able to extend the institute’s international reach and its research network.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  1. Conducting advanced research in any facet of Public Economics, Tax Policy, Tax and Development, Tax Governance and Administration, in a developing-country context;
  2. Publishing research in local and international accredited journals;
  3. Supervising postgraduate students on research topics in fields of Public Economics, Tax Policy, Tax and Development, Tax Governance and Administration;
  4. Teaching postgraduate programmes in Public Economics, Tax Policy, Tax and Development, Tax Governance and Administration.

Minimum Requirements

  1. A relevant doctoral degree, preferably in the fields of Public Economics, Tax Policy, Tax and Development;
  2. At least 2 accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs (accepted and/or published);
  3. At least 2 completed Master’s students or involvement with PhD supervision;
  4. At least 3 years’ relevant tertiary teaching experience and demonstrated competence;
  5. Evidence of professional engagements.

Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

  1. The ability to independently plan and initiate discipline-related teaching and research;
  2. The ability to integrate work from a variety of related disciplines;
  3. The ability to collaborate and participate in research and project initiatives;
  4. Appropriate language proficiency and communication skills;
  5. Computer literacy;
  6. The ability to seek and obtain external funding or research grants for research related activities.

Added Advantages And Preferences

  1. Existing network and collaboration in tax-related research;
  2. A publication record indicating at least national standing;
  3. Experience of tax-related research in an African context;
  4. Involvement in discipline-related professional activities and/or entities;
  5. Research experience in the public sector and/or multilateral international organisations;
  6. Qualification(s) in Public Economics and/or Econometrics;
  7. Experience in Tax Policy and Development.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
