Job Description

Main Activities and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  1. Spend approximately 70% of time in the laboratory following instructions from senior lab members.
  2. Communicate effectively with lab personnel and project teams.
  3. Supervise junior laboratory staff.
  4. Identify safety hazards and report OH&S incidents.
  5. Follow WSP's risk management, ethics, and safety approaches.
  6. Adhere to all WSP HSE Lab policies and procedures.
  7. Perform sample preparation and advanced laboratory testing (triaxial, DSS, consolidation, settling column, cyclic triaxial, bender element, resonant column) following standards and procedures.
  8. Prepare and review laboratory test certificates.
  9. Use laboratory test software and record data via templates and digital applications (Excel, Access, Word).
  10. Contribute to lab reports and develop testing procedures.
  11. Understand test requests and sample registration protocols.
  12. Maintain equipment checks, calibration, and maintenance.
  13. Ensure good housekeeping and tidiness in the lab.
  14. Deliver client outcomes that save costs and time.
  15. Apply legislation, standards, and project specifications.
  16. Mentor and transfer technical knowledge to others.
  17. Manage multiple projects' scope, timelines, and client relationships.
  18. Apply QA and OH&S systems, including auditing.
  19. Build technical, operational, and commercial capacity within the team.
  20. Supervise graduates and manage professionals and senior staff.
  21. Balance innovation, quality, and timely delivery.
  22. Model company and project values and principles.
  23. Be self-aware, promote professionalism, and exhibit emotional intelligence.
  24. Manage stress and pressure effectively.
  25. Physically capable of manual handling following procedures; pass medical and background checks.
Qualifications
  • Advanced Diploma in Laboratory Techniques with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Completed SANS training.
  • Preferably a degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Previous field work experience is a plus.
  • Driver's license (preferably manual).
  • Relevant SHEQ training (First Aid, safety induction, etc.).
  • Reliable, organized, detail-oriented, and capable of multitasking.
