Job summary

Andela is seeking a Senior Java Developer to join a payment systems project within the banking and financial services sector. You will focus on backend development using Java and Spring Boot, delivering features within an established architecture and supporting frontend or cloud work when required.

This is a client-facing, hybrid role for professionals based in South Africa who can work onsite at client offices in Johannesburg approximately three days per week.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Proven experience building and maintaining backend services.
• Strong SQL and relational database skills.
• Experience implementing features within an established architecture.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of delivery.
• Excellent communication and client-facing skills.
• Professional experience working within collaborative delivery teams.
• Currently based in South Africa.
• Ability to work onsite in Johannesburg, approximately three days per week.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build and integrate services with relational databases.
• Implement new features within an established system architecture.
• Write efficient SQL queries and contribute to database-related development.
• Troubleshoot technical issues and take ownership of solutions through completion.
• Collaborate with developers, architects, testers, and client stakeholders.
• Contribute to React frontend development when required.
• Support future cloud adoption and migration initiatives.
• Follow strict security, confidentiality, and data privacy policies.
• Communicate clearly and professionally in a client-facing consulting environment.
