Senior Java Backend Engineer – Banking & Payments (Hybrid)

Job summary

DVT is seeking experienced Java Software Engineers for a Cape Town-based banking and payments initiative. You will be embedded in an engineering squad, collaborating with senior engineers and leadership to deliver scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful APIs.

The role emphasizes event-driven architecture with Kafka, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm), and cloud familiarity. Initial 4–6 month contract with potential extension.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial software development experience.
• 4+ years of hands on Java development experience.
• 3+ years of experience building applications using Spring Boot.
• Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs in production environments.
• Experience working with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Experience working within Agile software development teams.
• Working knowledge of Apache Kafka and event-driven architecture.
• Experience with Docker and containerised application environments.
• Exposure to Kubernetes and Helm charts.
• Familiarity with AWS or another major cloud platform.
• Understanding of modern software development practices and the software development lifecycle.
• Experience with unit testing, integration testing and code review practices.

Responsibilities

• Designing, developing and maintaining backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Building RESTful APIs for a modern banking and payments platform.
• Developing services within an event-driven architecture using Apache Kafka.
• Working with multiple Kafka topics and integrating asynchronous services.
• Writing and maintaining SQL for MySQL and PostgreSQL databases.
• Creating and maintaining Dockerfiles and container configurations.
• Working with Kubernetes configuration and Helm charts.
• Contributing to technical design, sprint planning and whiteboarding sessions.
• Applying engineering standards through code reviews, testing and quality assurance.
• Using monitoring, tracking and tracing tools to support reliable production services.
• Collaborating with senior engineers and technical leads within an established delivery squad.
• Using AI coding tools responsibly to support development while retaining full accountability for code quality and technical decisions.
