Job description

Main purpose of the job: To lead research and analysis in line with the defined requirements and methodology, and to compile findings into reports for integration into the allocated project, supporting delivery against the research project plan/programme.

More about the role: An opening exists for an energetic researcher who will be a crucial member of the PRICELESS team. The role involves managing research using large datasets to evaluate the impact of existing or potential health policy interventions in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. The candidate must have strong communication skills, familiarity with applied economics and program evaluation research methods, data manipulation and management skills, robust econometric and statistical training, and experience with statistical software packages such as STATA and R.

The post-holder will report to the Research Director and will be based at the School of Public Health, Parktown, Johannesburg.

Key performance areas:
  1. Lead and participate in scoping research and projects, define hypotheses, methodology, reporting requirements, and plans by agreed deadlines.
  2. Develop research practices and approaches, review proposals, develop methodologies, and ensure quality standards and lessons learned are incorporated.
  3. Create project plans, define implementation steps, allocate time, and manage project delivery within deadlines and budgets.
  4. Manage stakeholder relationships through participation in meetings, providing feedback, resolving issues, and maintaining respectful relationships.
  5. Draft research and analysis papers, compile relevant documents, and seek approvals for submission or presentation.
  6. Manage all research documentation according to filing conventions and deadlines.
  7. Conduct quantitative data analysis, develop analysis tools, evaluate data quality, and interpret findings within deadlines.
  8. Review data analysis, evaluate findings, and develop recommendations based on analysis results.
  9. Develop research and analysis reports, supporting outputs with motivations and explanations, and draft recommendations.
  10. Schedule and supervise student research tasks, review student submissions, and provide feedback and support.
  11. Contribute to teaching activities, prepare for engagements, and evaluate learning outcomes.
  12. Monitor postgraduate submission targets, support students, and address challenges to ensure timely completion.
Minimum education and training:
  • PhD in Health Economics
  • Published on Economic Evaluations in academic journals
Minimum work experience:
  • At least 3 years in a health economics research environment
Desirable additional qualifications and abilities:
  • Experience in conducting economic evaluations
  • Proficiency with data analysis software
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Systematic, analytical research approach
  • Ability to work under pressure, independently, and in teams
  • Assertive, confident, adaptable
