Job Type: Permanent | Industry: Mining & Environmental Consulting

A leading environmental consultancy is seeking a Senior Groundwater Numerical Modeller to join their Johannesburg-based team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced hydrogeologist to play a key role in technically challenging projects that support sustainable resource management across Africa and beyond.

As a Senior Modeller, you'll be responsible for the design, development, and interpretation of numerical groundwater models, with a focus on supporting mining-related assessments, environmental impact studies, and water use licensing. You'll work closely with a team of multidisciplinary specialists and provide technical leadership, mentoring, and strategic input on a range of water-related projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop conceptual models and numerical simulations of groundwater flow and quality using tools such as MODFLOW, MT3D, or FeFLOW.
  • Conduct groundwater impact assessments, supply studies, and contamination investigations.
  • Collect and interpret hydrogeological data including geophysics, hydraulic testing, and hydrogeochemistry.
  • Lead or contribute to project planning, budgeting, reporting, and client liaison.
  • Integrate work into environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and support regulatory submissions.
  • Provide mentorship and training to junior staff, and collaborate across technical teams.

Requirements:

  • BSc (Hons) in Hydrogeology or a related field with Geology as a major; further qualifications in Chemistry or Mathematics advantageous.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in numerical groundwater modelling.
  • Strong understanding of groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling.
  • Experience in well design, hydrogeochemical analysis, and hydraulic test interpretation.
  • Registered with a relevant professional body.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel across Africa and internationally.

Why Apply?

  • Work on complex, high-impact projects across multiple geographies.
  • Join a globally active, sustainability-driven organisation.
  • Competitive salary, performance bonuses, and potential for equity participation.
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth.
