Job Description
As a Senior Environmental Officer, the position requires the applicant to be the project manager for multiple projects, as well as manage and lead junior colleagues and their projects.
This requires personal authority.
Personal authority results from experience, reputation, skill, character, and personal example.
The role involves direct involvement in complex, environmentally significant projects, including:
- Environmental Impact Assessments, client liaison, specialist appointments, and authority management to achieve a Record of Decision.
- Conducting environmental management projects such as Environmental Management Frameworks, Strategic Environmental Assessments, Risk Assessments, and Environmental Compliance monitoring.
- Performing site visits and baseline investigations to determine project sensitivity, legal requirements, and scope of specialist work.
- Leading Public Participation campaigns in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Generating high-quality, accurate reports reflecting environmental sensitivities and mitigation measures, compliant with legislative requirements and industry best practices.
- Developing environmental control documents to manage construction and operational impacts.
Regarding team management, duties include:
- Assuming overall project management responsibility, including client and internal reporting.
- Understanding each project thoroughly, including client meetings and initial site visits.
- Ensuring project timelines and budgets are met and managing deviations.
- Liaising professionally with clients and authorities to document decisions and clarify requirements.
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting.
- Generating reports and project control documents.
- Mentoring junior project leaders and transferring knowledge.
- Utilizing the company's quality management system.
- Leading by example in work ethic, attention to detail, and ethical behavior.
- Performing administrative functions as required.
Qualifications
- Masters degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management.
- 7-10 years of practical experience in environmental consulting, with strong knowledge of environmental management processes.
- Experience leading junior environmental officers and demonstrating leadership qualities.
- Registration as an Environmental Assessment Practitioner with EAPASA is required.
- Registration with SACNASP or equivalent is an added benefit.
