Job Description
As a Senior Environmental Officer, the position requires the applicant to be the project manager for multiple projects, providing leadership and management of junior colleagues and their projects. This role demands personal authority, which stems from experience, reputation, skills, character, and personal example.
The position involves direct involvement in project-related work, handling complex and environmentally significant projects. Responsibilities include:
- Environmental Impact Assessment, client liaison, specialist appointments, and authority management to achieve a Record of Decision.
- Conducting environmental management projects such as Environmental Management Frameworks, Strategic Environmental Assessments, Risk Assessments, and Environmental Compliance assessments.
- Performing site visits and baseline investigations to assess project sensitivity, legal requirements, and scope of specialist work.
- Leading Public Participation campaigns in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Generating high-quality, accurate reports reflecting environmental sensitivities, project nature, and mitigation measures, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and industry best practices.
- Developing environmental control documents to manage construction and operational impacts.
Leadership and Management Responsibilities
Managing junior project leaders involves:
- Assuming overall project management, including regular reporting to clients and internal teams.
- Understanding each project thoroughly, including conducting inception meetings and initial site visits.
- Ensuring project programs and budgets are set and adhered to, managing deviations effectively.
- Liaising professionally with clients and authorities, documenting decisions and requirements.
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving.
- Generating reports and project management documents for formal control.
- Mentoring and transferring knowledge to project leaders.
- Utilizing the company's quality management system.
- Setting an example of hard work, attention to detail, and ethical behavior to improve team performance.
- Performing administrative functions as required.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management.
Work Experience
- 7-10 years in environmental consulting, with practical knowledge of environmental management processes.
- Experience leading junior environmental officers and demonstrating strong leadership qualities.
Professional Qualifications
- Registration as an Environmental Assessment Practitioner with EAPSA.
- Registration with SACNASP or equivalent is an advantage.
