About the Role

Our client, a leading industrial group with significant operations in Benoni, Gauteng, is seeking a dedicated Senior Environmental Engineer to ensure robust compliance with all environmental regulations. This pivotal role focuses on developing, implementing, and managing environmental management systems and strategies to minimize the environmental footprint of our industrial activities. The Senior Environmental Engineer will be responsible for monitoring environmental performance, conducting impact assessments, managing waste streams, and ensuring adherence to permits and legislation across multiple facilities. You will be a key advisor on environmental best practices and sustainability initiatives, contributing significantly to the company’s responsible operational framework in South Africa. This position requires a hands-on approach with regular site visits to operational facilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement comprehensive Environmental Management Systems (EMS) aligned with ISO 14001 standards.
• Monitor and assess environmental performance, including air emissions, water discharge, and waste management.
• Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and manage environmental permitting processes.
• Ensure compliance with national and local environmental laws, regulations, and company policies.
• Develop and execute waste minimization and management programs.
• Investigate environmental incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventative actions.
• Provide environmental training and awareness programs for employees.
• Liaise with regulatory authorities, community stakeholders, and external environmental consultants.
• Oversee environmental monitoring programs and analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
• Contribute to the company’s sustainability goals and initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in environmental engineering, with a strong focus on industrial compliance and management systems.
• Proven experience in developing and implementing ISO 14001 certified EMS.
• In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation, EIA processes, and permitting requirements.
• Experience in managing air quality, water pollution control, and hazardous waste management.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
• Excellent communication, reporting, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) or Professional Natural Scientist (Pr. Sci. Nat.) registration is highly desirable.
• Experience within industrial sectors in Benoni, Gauteng is a significant advantage.
