About the Role

Our client, a leading environmental consultancy firm supporting the energy sector, is seeking a Senior Environmental Consultant. This role is integral to guiding energy development projects through complex environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes and ensuring regulatory compliance. Based in Benoni, Gauteng , with a hybrid work arrangement, you will manage multifaceted environmental projects, liaise with stakeholders, and provide expert advice on sustainable energy development. This is a key opportunity for an experienced environmental professional to contribute significantly to the responsible growth of the energy industry in South Africa . The position demands strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of environmental legislation, and excellent project management capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Basic Assessments, and Waste Management License applications for energy projects (including renewable and conventional power generation).
• Conduct baseline studies, impact prediction, and mitigation measure development.
• Develop and implement Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and monitoring programs.
• Engage effectively with regulatory authorities, clients, and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
• Conduct environmental site audits and compliance monitoring.
• Provide expert environmental advice and strategic guidance to energy sector clients.
• Prepare high-quality environmental reports, proposals, and presentations.
• Stay current with national and international environmental legislation, policies, and best practices relevant to the energy sector.
• Mentor junior consultants and contribute to team development.
• Undertake specialist studies as required, such as biodiversity assessments or water use license applications.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geography, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in environmental consulting, with a significant focus on the energy sector.
• Demonstrated experience in managing and delivering EIAs and other environmental authorizations for large-scale energy projects.
• In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation (NEMA, MPRDA, etc.) and EIA processes.
• Proven ability to conduct environmental risk assessments and develop effective mitigation strategies.
• Excellent project management, organizational, and time management skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentation capabilities.
• Proficiency in relevant software and GIS applications is advantageous.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Willingness to travel to project sites as needed, potentially around the Benoni region and beyond.
