SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT PRACTITIONER to be based in Plumstead, Cape Town (Must be EAPASA registered or in the process of registering)

An established environmental consultancy based in Cape Town, South Africa, with over 24 years experience delivering high-quality services across southern Africa, is looking for a skilled Senior Environmental Assessment Practitioner to join them in leading complex environmental and compliance projects.

This role is ideal for someone ready to take the lead on Environmental Impact Assessments and related permitting processes, while also contributing to the growth of the team and supporting new service areas like Calculate Your Carbon, their division focused on carbon tax compliance and climate-conscious consulting.

Deliver Compliant Environmental Assessments

Ensure all assessments meet South African regulatory standards and reflect best environmental practice.

Produce High-Quality Reports, On Time and Within Budget

Manage project timelines and resources effectively to deliver accurate, well-structured reports.

Lead Effective Stakeholder Engagement

Facilitate inclusive public participation processes that build trust and support project approvals.

Build and Maintain Strong Client Relationships

Provide consistent, value-adding service that encourages client satisfaction and repeat business.

Mentor and Develop Junior Consultants

Share knowledge and provide guidance to support team growth and professional development.

THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROLE ARE :

  • QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE : A relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geography, or a related field AND a minimum of 3+ years’ proven experience in independently managing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Water Use Licence Application (WULA) processes.
  • PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION & LEGAL KNOWLEDGE : Registered with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa or in the process of registering (EAPASA), confirming eligibility to practice as an Environmental Assessment Practitioner, WITH a strong understanding of South African environmental legislation and its practical application.
  • TECHNICAL REPORTING SKILLS : A proven ability to draft high-quality, accurate reports such as :

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)

  • Basic Assessment Reports (BARs)
  • Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs)
  • Water Use Licence Applications (WULAs)
  • TRAVEL & FIELD WORK READINESS : A valid South African driver’s license, own reliable vehicle, AND the willingness to travel for site visits, stakeholder engagements, and project-related activities as needed.
  • COMMUNICATION & TEAMWORK : Confident in client and stakeholder engagement, WITH a proven track record in collaborating and working effectively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver excellent outcomes.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE :

PROJECT AND PROCESS MANAGEMENT

  • Oversee and manage environmental application processes, including coordination with specialists, engagement with authorities, and regular client communication.
  • Plan and facilitate public participation processes, including stakeholder meetings and community engagement.
  • Lead project planning and execution across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring timely delivery and continuous feedback.

TECHNICAL REPORTING AND LICENSING

  • Conduct environmental baseline and constraints assessments.
  • Prepare and compile a range of environmental reports and regulatory submissions, including :

Basic Assessment Reports (BARs)

  • Scoping Reports and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
  • Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs)
  • Site Sensitivity Verification Reports
  • Waste, Air Emission, and Water Use Licence Applications
  • Comments and Responses Reports

COMPLIANCE AND REGULATORY AUDITING

  • Perform environmental compliance audits and assist with environmental risk identification and mitigation.
  • Ensure full alignment with relevant environmental legislation, regulations, and project-specific conditions of approval.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT AND FACILITATION

  • Lead and facilitate stakeholder discussions, public workshops, and community engagement initiatives.
  • Promote inclusive participation and manage constructive dialogue with stakeholders and Interested & Affected Parties (I&APs).

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT

  • Build and sustain strong client relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support and mentor junior team members, contributing to their professional development and the overall knowledge base of the team.
