Job description

BEAL Group is a group of specialist businesses, located in Silverlakes, Pretoria, built on deep technical expertise, entrepreneurial thinking and accountable delivery. Our companies operate independently within their areas of specialisation, while sharing a common character, reputation and commitment to doing work properly.

BEAL Engineering is the Group’s specialist engineering business, delivering technical, advisory and design services across mining, infrastructure, tailings and related sectors. Our work combines strong technical judgement with practical problem-solving and a willingness to take ownership of complex challenges.

Joining BEAL means becoming part of a dynamic and growing environment where people are encouraged to develop deep skills, challenge thinking, contribute ideas and take increasing ownership of their work. We believe strong businesses are built by strong people, and we actively create opportunities for our people to grow technically, professionally and as future leaders.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Geologist with 7+ years’ relevant experience to lead and manage geotechnical investigations, mentor junior staff, and deliver high-quality interpretive technical reports for complex civil infrastructure, mining and tailings projects.

CHARACTER TRAITS:
  • Take ownership - Accept responsibility for outcomes, follow through on commitments and stand behind the quality of their work.
  • Apply sound judgement - Use evidence, experience and technical reasoning to make considered decisions, particularly when conditions are uncertain or complex.
  • Solve problems practically - Approach challenges with curiosity, initiative and a solutions-focused mindset.
  • Communicate openly and early - Raise concerns, risks and difficult issues constructively rather than allowing problems to grow.
  • Work collaboratively - Contribute positively to multidisciplinary teams, share knowledge and respect the expertise of others.
  • Develop people - Actively mentor junior team members, transfer knowledge and help build capability within the wider team.
  • Keep learning - Remain curious, open to new approaches and committed to continuous professional and technical development.
  • Think commercially - Understand that good engineering must also consider client needs, project constraints, programme and cost.
  • Protect the BEAL reputation - Act with integrity, professionalism and care in every interaction with colleagues, clients and stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Field Leadership: Oversee and undertake core logging, trial pit profiling, chip logging and field mapping. Proficiency in CPTu and SCPTu testing and interpretation will be considered an advantage.
  • Geotechnical Reporting: Author comprehensive interpretive reports, including the development of ground models and foundation recommendations.
  • Project Management: Lead geotechnical investigation projects from scoping and planning through execution, reporting and close-out.
  • Quality Assurance: Review borehole and test pit profiles, as well as soil and rock laboratory test results, to verify engineering design parameters and ensure the quality of investigation outputs.
  • Client Relations: Manage stakeholder communication, project budgets and delivery timelines independently.
  • Mentorship: Supervise, mentor and develop candidate engineering geologists, junior geotechnical engineers and junior field technicians, including guidance on geotechnical investigation practice and reporting.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: BSc (Hons) degree in Engineering Geology.
  • Professional Registration: Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) status with SACNASP.
  • Experience: 7+ years of verifiable, relevant experience in engineering geology environments.
  • Professional Affiliation: Active membership with the South African Institute of Engineering Geologists (SAIEG) and/or the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is preferred.
  • Travel: Valid Code B driver’s licence and willingness to travel to remote project sites.
TECHNICAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
  • Strong knowledge and experience of the Southern African geological setting. Knowledge and experience of the broader African geological setting, including karst, tropical soils, saprolite and laterite, will be considered an advantage.
  • Experience in managing and execution of field investigations, including technical supervision, stakeholder management, financial controls and project management.
  • Strong working knowledge of South African and/or international logging and profiling standards. Knowledge and experience in the execution and interpretation of CPTu and SCPTu investigations will be considered an advantage.
  • Proficiency in software such as OpenGround (gINT), CPeT-IT, dotPlot and Rocscience (kinematic suite) will be considered an advantage.
