A leading engineering consultancy in Johannesburg is seeking a Senior Engineer in Planning & Traffic Engineering. This role involves managing transport planning projects, coordinating teams and ensuring project quality, with a focus on client relationships. Qualifications

  • BEng or BTech degree in Civil Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in traffic impact assessments, transport planning, policy development, and report writing.
  • Competency in software like ArcGIS, EMME, and Microsoft products.
  • Understanding of transport economics is advantageous.
  • Professional registration with ECSA.

REPORTS TO

Section Manager or any other person appointed to supervise him/her from time to time.

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering services on projects within the Road and Highways Functional group, including project management and delivery and managing professional teams of medium/large projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the general management of medium/large projects
  • Responsible for the project management and coordination of multi-disciplinary project teams
  • Look after budgets, resourcing and outsourcing of project work within the section, as well as agree project budgets with other sections on large projects comprising multi-disciplinary project teams
  • Author competent technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality
  • Check work of all those in the project team and take responsibility for their work
  • Present / represent their technical work
  • Draft successful responses to bids
  • Clear knowledge of work procedures and ability to brief project team on them
  • Assign work to others
  • Regular client visits or contact under direction of more senior manager
  • Build relationships with clients
  • Successful in identifying and following through on leads associated with additional work prospects on the projects they are involved with
  • Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets
  • Discuss in detail with clients the business technologies and markets
  • Train others in respective functional field and build a team
  • Market technical capability
  • Supervise Engineers or Technicians in undertaking checks and inspections of constructed works for compliance with design and specifications, including monitoring and proposing remedial actions
  • Development and/or improvement of function group specific design procedures
  • Plan and coordinate investigations and surveys
  • Coordinate work between functions

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

  • Overseeing and delivery of design standards
  • Quality and timeliness of reporting and other deliverables such as drawings
  • Planning of workload to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge and implementation of SMEC’s systems and procedures
  • Reporting to meet project and internal requirements
  • Client satisfaction with project delivery
  • Report writing

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • BEng or BTech degree in Civil Engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years’ working experience in the following fields: traffic impact assessments, transport planning projects, policy development, survey design, research, report writing and presentation, signal plan development.
  • Competency using the following software would be advantageous for this position: ArcGIS, EMME, Transyt, Sidra, Saturn, HTM, Visum, Vissim.
  • Understanding of transport economics and transport finance would be advantageous
  • Competency in Microsoft products such as Word, Excel as well as exposure to programming platforms such as Python
  • Be an all-rounder with fair experience on transport planning and engineering associated work within the private and public space.
  • Professional registration with ECSA
  • Ability to write effective reports and EOI’s.
  • Co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal capabilities
  • Be able to operate independently with the support of a team
