Valterra Platinum is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer for its Smelting Operations. The role focuses on electrical safety, energy strategy, and project execution with EPCMs, supporting the energy efficiency program across multiple systems.
The position requires a BTech/BSc/BEng in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current), ECSA registration, and extensive mining/utilities experience. Leadership, maintenance planning, and renewal energy initiatives are central to this role.
Qualifications
- BTech/BSc/BEng in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) required.
- ECSA registration as Professional Electrical Engineer/Technologist preferred.
- GCC Factories beneficial.
- Post-graduate degree in Electrical Engineering advantageous.
- Project Management qualification advantageous.
- Advanced Management Programme (MDP/AMP) advantageous.
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) advantageous.
Responsibilities
- Ensure electrical safety and safe execution of electrical work.
- Interface with EPCMs and consultants for efficient projects.
- Oversee energy management and efficiency programmes across electrical, hydrocarbon, PV and steam.
- Monitor energy consumption, baselining, auditing and improvements.
- Maintain ETAP models and key protection/distribution systems.
- Coordinate monthly energy reports and present savings to Executives.
- Provide guidance to Engineering Specialists and Senior Foremen on PM, QA and MTBF.

Smelting Operations
- Electrical safety and safe execution of electrical work.
- Operation and project execution mastery is our prime function.
- Energy efficiency strategy management programmes in the fields of electrical, hydrocarbon, photo voltaic and steam consumption.
- Ensure that all energy consumption levels are baselined, monitored and audited for improvement purposes.
- Interface with EPCM’s and consultants to ensure that all projects are technically correct and optimally efficient.
- Major items of systems are maintained for optimal efficiency.
- Regulate the implementation of and maintenance to ETAP fault level, load flow and protection discrimination models.
- Asset management becomes an entrenched culture at operations.
- New technology is evaluated and implemented as, when and where appropriate.
- Monitor and respond to quality of supply problems.
- Strive to entrench an energy efficient culture.
- Manage and monitor the Eskom load curtailment programme specifically to the Smelters. Interface with Operations during planned load curtailment to reduce power consumption accordingly.
- Manage the power factor correction installations.
- Review the notified maximum demand and essential load requirements with Eskom on an annual basis.
- Manage energy security and the Eskom points of delivery.
- Coordinate the monthly energy reports from the operations and consolidate savings for submission to the Executive Committee monthly.
- Be actively involved in energy awareness campaigns.
- Prepare and update site issue-based risk registers.
- Identify opportunities to deploy new renewable energy sources.
- Provide managerial advice and support to Engineering Specialists and Senior Electrical Foremen as follows:
- Effective execution and monitoring of the operations planned maintenance programme.
- Standards enforcement and quality assurance.
- Analysis and improvement.
- Planning and scheduling.
- Information management.
- Early equipment management.
- Training and development.
- Maintenance material management.
- Maintenance facilities and tools.
- Full compliance with technical directives and guidelines received from the Corporate office.
- Absolute focused approach on discipline-specific excellence.
- Striving towards strengthening communication channels and a healthy working relationship with the Principal Engineer Electrical and Energy.
- No fatalities, injuries or reportable incidents.
- No Electrical or Energy major non-compliances.
- All new projects are technically correct and energy efficient.
- No non-compliances related to the Electrical and Energy discipline.
- No major production downtime owing to Electrical discipline related issues or new Energy technology risks.
- Minimum of BTech/BSc/BEng in Electrical Engineering Heavy Current (NQF Level 7).
- GCC Factories will be beneficial.
- Registration, with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), as a Professional Electrical Engineer, Professional Electrical Certified Engineer or Professional Electrical Engineering Technologist.
- A post-graduate degree in Electrical Engineering (NQF Level 8/9) will be advantageous.
- A qualification in Project Management will be advantageous.
- Advanced Management Programme or the equivalent will be advantageous (MDP or AMP).
- Registered as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) will be advantageous.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience working in the Mining, Process and utilities industry, 5 years’ of which must be in a management role and, with additional prerequisites as follows:
- 5 years’ operational experience and 1 year testing and commissioning experience as part of an operational team that commissioned a plant with exposure to operate and maintain the following:
- Electrical power transmission and distribution equipment.
- Furnace Electrical Reticulation and operation.
- Medium voltage and low voltage distribution systems.
- System earthing and lightning protection.
- Protection and grading.
- Power, Furnace and distribution transformers.
- Liquid resistance starters.
- Variable speed drives.
- Diesel generators.
- Overhead lines
- Uninterruptible power supply systems.
- Communications enabled devices.
- Intelligent motor protection.
- Compressed air systems.
- Heating and cooling systems.
- Pumping of fluids and slurries.
- Energy Security management and liaison with Eskom.
- Bulk electricity and power factor management.
- Large mechanical and electrical drives applications.
- Alternative fuel consumers.
- At least 1 years’ experience working with Energy Efficiency initiatives such as power factor correction, photo voltaic cells, variable speed drives, luminaires, time of use tariff, demand management, energy recovery, etc.
