PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE
This position is a technical role which involves technical leadership and lifting the overall technical performance of the discipline within the team. He/she will provide technical expertise in a wide variety of stormwater projects including township developments; provincial rural roads; intersection drainage design; urban arterials and national freeways; compilation of stormwater master plans and detailed stormwater management plans. Experience in hydrology and hydraulics of river bridges and major culverts will be beneficial, as well as designing of attenuation facilities and demarcation of flood lines.
THE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assume technical responsibility on multiple medium/large projects.
- Responsible for the coordination of multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Provide technical leadership in a multi-disciplinary team and provide technical support and guidance to peers and other functional groups within the level of your expertise.
- Author competent technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality.
- Check work of all those in the project team and take responsibility for their work .
- Present / represent their technical work.
- Draft successful responses to bids.
- Clear knowledge of work procedures and ability to brief project team on them.
- Assign work to others.
- Regular client contact under direction of more senior manager.
- Build relationships with clients.
- Successful in identifying and following through on leads associated with additional work prospects on the projects they are involved with.
- Clear understanding of local functional business technologies and markets.
- Discuss in detail with clients the business technologies and markets.
- Train others in respective functional field and build a team.
- Market technical capability.
- Supervise Engineers or Technicians in undertaking checks and inspections of constructed works for compliance with design and specifications, including monitoring and proposing remedial actions.
- Development and/or improvement of function group specific design procedures.
- Plan and coordinate investigations and surveys.
- Coordinate work between functions.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
- Overseeing and delivery of design standards.
- Quality and timeliness of reporting and other deliverables such as drawings.
- Planning of workload to meet deadlines.
- Knowledge and implementation of SMEC’s systems and procedures.
- Reporting to meet project and internal requirements.
- Client satisfaction with project delivery.
- Report writing.
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng)/higher from accredited university/college.
- Professional Registration with ECSA essential.
- At least 8 years of professional experience (3 years post professional registration) in transportation infrastructure with a strong background in drainage design.
- In depth experience of government standards, codes and documentation.
- Experience in Bentley Open Roads Design and/or Autodesk Civil 3D.
- Proficiency in HEC-RAS and Hydro CAD will be beneficial.
- Knowledge of web-based project cost control and financial systems (BST).
- Experience in design management and design delivery for projects and managing professional teams of medium/large projects, would be beneficial.
- Knowledge of QA and OHS requirements on engineering projects and ISO Standards will be beneficial.
- Knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to conceptualise designs and effective report writing.
- Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations.
- Co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Ability to make technical decisions which are outcome driven.
