Job description

Overview : As part of an overall refresh of its underlying business processes and IT, Glencore is currently executing a number of projects that involve significant business and technological change.

These projects include a mixture of database technologies including Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase ASE, Sybase IQ, Azure SQL, and more. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Database Administrator (DBA) specializing in Oracle and MS SQL Server to join our DBA team.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and performance tuning of our databases, ensuring the availability, integrity, and security of our data.

This role requires strong analytical skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of database technologies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
  1. Install, configure, and upgrade Oracle and MS SQL Server databases.
  2. Identify and resolve database performance issues.
  3. Develop, manage, and test backup and recovery plans.
  4. Perform database tuning, indexing, and query optimisation where necessary.
  5. Ensure data integrity and security through implementation of best practices for database management.
  6. Develop and enforce policies and procedures for database management through the use of scripting and automation tools such as Ansible and GitHub.
  7. Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configuration, processes, and procedures.
  8. Manage and maintain database replication.
  9. Work with app teams to create, maintain, and optimise database queries and schemas.
  10. Occasional weekend work for major upgrades and patches.
QUALIFICATION & SKILL REQUIREMENTS :
Minimum Qualifications :

Tertiary Qualification in information science or computer science or a related field.

Work Experience :
Essential :
  1. Expert level experience as an Oracle DBA, with extensive knowledge of SQL Server.
  2. Experience with database performance tuning and optimisation.
  3. Strong knowledge of database security practices, tools, and procedures.
  4. Proven experience in database installation, configuration, upgrading and patch management.
  5. Strong knowledge of SQL, PL / SQL, and other scripting languages such as bash / powershell.
  6. Experience with database replication.
  7. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  9. Experience in the design and delivery of enterprise grade highly available solutions.
  10. Strong communication and documentation skills with the ability to convey technical issues to all levels.
  11. Builds and maintains strong relationships with leaders, customers, and team members.
Desirable :
  1. Some knowledge of other common database and caching technologies, such as Sybase IQ / ASE, Rep Server, Azure SQL, CosmosDB, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL / MariaDB, Memcache, or Redis.
  2. Exposure to iterative / agile development methodologies and experience of enabling team delivery through technology.
  3. An appreciation for SRE and monitoring using tools such as ELK stack and Solarwinds.
