Job summary

Lula is seeking a Senior Data Engineer in Cape Town to build and run our data pipelines on Azure and Snowflake, partnering with data scientists and analysts to deliver reliable data for product, operations and credit decisions.

You will own end-to-end data models, ensure data quality and cost efficiency, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to hiring. The role blends hands-on engineering with cross-functional collaboration in a fast-growing fintech.

Qualifications

• Degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, mathematics or equivalent practical experience.
• 3-5 years’ experience in data engineering.
• Strong hands-on Snowflake experience including VARIANT/JSON handling and cost optimisation.
• Experience with dbt models, tests and documentation generation.
• Experience with schema changes as code (schemachange, Flyway, Liquibase).
• Proficiency in SQL and data modelling concepts.
• Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure/AWS/GCP).
• Proven ability to design scalable data models and pipelines.
• Experience CI/CD and IaC (Terraform).
• Excellent communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Partner with stakeholders to translate business needs into delivery plans.
• Own end-to-end design and delivery of data pipelines on Azure and Snowflake.
• Create and maintain robust ELT/ETL products for batch and real-time data pipelines.
• Assemble data sets meeting functional and non-functional requirements.
• Own reliability, monitoring, data quality and cost of pipelines.
• Follow test-driven development and uphold code quality standards.
• Collaborate with Data, Analytics and ML teams and analysts.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to hiring.
• Demo work to stakeholders and create training materials.
