We support Ministries of Finance, Central Banks, and other government agencies in their reform efforts to foster faster, inclusive, and resilient growth.Economic Policy in Southern Africa : The EP unit for Southern Africa and the Horn of Africa (EAEM2), based in Pretoria, is seeking a Senior Country Economist to cover countries in the Southern Africa Country Management Unit (AECS1).
The ideal candidate is passionate about development challenges, adaptable, with broad and deep technical expertise, and strong policy dialogue skills.The selected candidate will report to the EP Practice Manager for EAEM2.
The unit covers 14 countries across three Country Management Units, including South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, and Sudan.
The focus is on supporting socio-economic transformation through policy dialogue, technical assistance, and analytical work, including regional flagships.Duties include : Lead macro-fiscal, growth, and structural reform dialogues with government stakeholders, IMF, development partners, and others;Contribute to core deliverables such as DPOs, analytical reports, and policy notes on fiscal efficiency, revenue mobilization, public spending, and economic transformation;Provide analytical input for country strategies and participate in key review meetings;Develop innovative economic analysis approaches relevant to operations;Support strategic engagements through briefs, presentations, and policy notes.Selection CriteriaA Ph.D. or Master's degree in Economics with at least 8 years of relevant experience;Experience leading impactful operations and analytical work;Broad economic knowledge linking macro, institutional, and micro levels;Experience in development policy and sector strategies;Strong policy dialogue skills and ability to conduct independent discussions;Cross-sectoral understanding and macroeconomic expertise;Effective communication skills for influencing and persuading stakeholders.World Bank Group Core CompetenciesThe World Bank Group offers comprehensive benefits, including retirement, health, life, disability insurance, and paid leave.
