Santam's Broker Solutions, Commercial Portfolio Management - Sales division currently has an exciting opportunity available for a Senior Commercial Underwriter, who will be based within the Sales department at Hill on Empire - Parktown.

What will make you successful in this role?

Work in this job family stream is concerned with managing commercial risk by providing specialist technical underwriting advice. It is a highly technical role with strong client focus.

The key focus is on underwriting new and existing business to maintain profitability while also creating a platform to aid the growth process. The individual is responsible for taking sound underwriting decisions through mandates and taking initiative and is a key source of knowledge and leverage to the business at large.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Effective underwriting of complex risks (new business, renewals, ad-hoc).
2. Identifying re-insurance and appropriate action.
3. Effective screening actions.
4. Providing quality and correct feedback on high level technical queries.
5. Working within higher level mandates.
6. Negotiating with internal and external clients.
7. Building and maintaining relationships at various levels within the organisation including CCC, Distribution and HO underwriting.
8. Strong retention (profitability and growth) focus.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

1. A minimum of 10 years underwriting experience within a short-term Commercial insurance industry required.
2. Grade 12.
3. IISA professional membership (associate).
4. FAIS compliant: NQF level 6 (Commercial Lines).
5. Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
6. Regulatory Examination (RE) advantageous.
7. Extensive commercial short-term insurance knowledge; commercial product training (SMK's) and Risk Identification program/qualification advantageous.
8. A good understanding of operational processes, SLA's and commercial quoting tools.
