Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Coastal Engineer to lead the design and implementation of coastal protection structures, port and harbour projects, and marine infrastructure in the Limpopo region. You will manage complex projects, provide technical leadership and ensure environmental sustainability of coastal developments.

The role requires a MSc/MEng in Coastal or Civil Engineering with a coastal specialization, 9+ years of experience, and Pr.Eng registration or eligibility.

Qualifications

• MSc or MEng in Coastal or Civil Engineering with a specialization in Coastal Engineering.
• A minimum of 9 years of professional experience in coastal and marine engineering.
• Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration with ECSA or eligible.
• Experience with coastal modeling software and multidisciplinary project leadership.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of coastal defence structures such as seawalls, breakwaters and groynes.
• Oversee feasibility studies and detailed design for port/harbour facilities and offshore structures.
• Conduct numerical modeling of waves, currents and sediment transport.
• Prepare design reports, technical specs and EIAs.
• Manage project teams, budgets and timelines to deliver client requirements.
• Mentor junior staff and liaise with clients and regulators throughout projects.
• Travel to coastal areas as needed, with primary office in Polokwane.

About the Role

Our client, a leading coastal and marine engineering consultancy, is seeking a dynamic Senior Coastal Engineer to join their established team in Polokwane . This critical role involves leading the design and implementation of coastal protection structures, port and harbour development, and marine infrastructure projects. You will be responsible for managing complex projects, providing expert technical leadership, and ensuring the environmental sustainability of coastal developments. The ideal candidate will have a profound understanding of hydrodynamics, sediment transport, wave mechanics, and coastal processes. This is a significant career opportunity for a seasoned professional to contribute to vital infrastructure projects along the coast and within the Limpopo region's riverine systems.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and development of coastal defence structures, including seawalls, breakwaters, and groynes. Undertake feasibility studies and detailed design for port and harbour facilities, jetties, and offshore structures. Conduct numerical modeling of wave, current, and sediment transport phenomena using specialized software. Prepare comprehensive design reports, technical specifications, and environmental impact assessments. Manage project teams, budgets, and timelines, ensuring successful project delivery in accordance with client requirements. Provide expert advice on coastal zone management, erosion control, and maritime infrastructure. Liaise effectively with clients, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders throughout project lifecycles. Mentor junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation. Conduct site investigations and supervise construction activities for coastal projects. Willingness to travel to project sites as needed, despite the primary office location in Polokwane , which will require occasional site visits to coastal areas.

Requirements

MSc or MEng in Coastal or Civil Engineering with a specialization in Coastal Engineering. A minimum of 9 years of relevant professional experience in coastal and marine engineering. Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration with ECSA or eligible. Demonstrated expertise in coastal modeling software (e.g., DELFT3D, MIKE 21, SMS). In-depth knowledge of hydrodynamics, oceanography, sediment dynamics, and coastal structures. Proven experience in managing complex coastal engineering projects and multidisciplinary teams. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and report-writing capabilities. Strong communication, negotiation, and client liaison skills. Willingness to travel to project sites as needed, despite the primary office location in Polokwane , which will require occasional site visits to coastal areas.
