Placements24 is seeking a seasoned Coastal Engineer for a fully remote team to design and manage coastal infrastructure projects addressing erosion, sea-level rise, and shoreline protection. The role emphasizes hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and coastal processes with opportunities to lead multidisciplinary teams across geographies.

The ideal candidate has a Master’s in Civil/Coastal Engineering, 7+ years of experience, and proficiency in MIKE, Delft3D, or XBeach.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Civil Engineering or Coastal Engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 7 years of coastal engineering experience, including project management.
• Pr Eng registration with ECSA is desirable.
• Proficiency with coastal modeling software (MIKE, Delft3D, XBeach) and strong technical communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and analysis of coastal structures (breakwaters, seawalls, groynes, revetments).
• Conduct numerical modeling of coastal processes (waves, sediment transport, tides) using specialized software.
• Develop coastal management plans, shoreline protection strategies, and environmental impact assessments.
• Perform hydraulic and hydrodynamic analysis for ports and nearshore developments.
• Assess impacts of sea-level rise and climate change on infrastructure and ecosystems.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, design documents, and tender packages.
• Collaborate with environmental scientists, geologists, and engineers across geographies.
• Provide expert advice to clients and stakeholders on coastal engineering matters.
• Oversee project execution within budgets and timelines; mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Civil Engineering or Coastal Engineering, with a strong focus on coastal processes.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA is highly desirable.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in coastal engineering, including project management.
• Proficiency in coastal modeling software such as MIKE by DHI suite, Delft3D, XBeach, or similar.
• Strong understanding of wave mechanics, sediment dynamics, coastal morphology, and maritime structures.
• Experience in conducting coastal hazard and risk assessments.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
• Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and lead remote teams effectively.
• Familiarity with relevant South African environmental legislation and coastal zone management policies.
