Job description

WSP Mine Closure Team Leader

WSP is committed to a culture driven by safety, quality, and continuous improvement. The role primarily requires support and leadership for the Mine Closure Team, raising its profile within the mining industry and improving project backlog. The goal is to enhance the ability to deliver quality projects on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver leading closure practice consulting services to internal and external clients in South Africa, Africa, and globally.
  2. Contribute complex technical expertise to the Mine Closure practice, developing innovative approaches and techniques.
  3. Mentor and develop the Mine Closure team.
  4. Lead transdisciplinary project teams on local, regional, and international closure consulting projects, ensuring safety, timeliness, budget adherence, and compliance with international standards.
  5. Coordinate teams to develop proposals and deliver projects successfully.
  6. Collaborate with senior WSP Mining team members to implement business growth strategies and maintain client relationships.
  7. Provide technical input on closure planning, such as devising closure criteria for waste residue facilities, contaminated land rehabilitation, and mine water treatment.
  8. Compile and integrate reports, spreadsheets, and drawings into final deliverables.
  9. Make project decisions and manage junior staff in executing tasks.

  • Model SHEQ standards and promote a safe working environment.
  • Identify SHEQ risks and drive processes toward Zero Harm.
  • Uphold company values and ensure ongoing safety compliance.
Key Competencies and Skills:

Extensive closure experience and deep knowledge of South African and African mining sectors, especially in rehabilitation and closure. Additional competencies include:

  • Leadership, guidance, and mentorship skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to integrate multidisciplinary disciplines into deliverables.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Experience in client engagement and representing the company professionally.
Experience:
  • Minimum 15 years in Mine Closure and environmental management; additional experience in related environmental aspects is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to lead high-performing teams.
  • Experience in developing client relationships and contributing to business growth.
  • Experience in sectors like mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, and energy is preferred.
  • Experience working in South Africa and other African countries is beneficial.
Qualifications:
  • BTech / BEng / BSc in mining, environmental management, or engineering.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying or Landscape Architecture (BScLArch, BL(Hons), ML(Prof)).
  • BSc(Hons) in spatial/geographical sciences is also acceptable.
  • Minimum of 15 years relevant experience in mine rehabilitation, closure planning, and environmental management.
Other Requirements:
  • Driver’s license is mandatory.
  • Valid passport and willingness to travel abroad.
