Job description

Senior Marine Underwriter
Location: Birmingham or Manchester (Hybrid Working)
Competitive Salary + Bonus + Excellent Benefits
Permanent, Full-Time

We’re partnering with a leading insurer to recruit an experienced Senior Marine Underwriter to join their high-performing Cargo & Freight team, based in either Birmingham or Manchester.

This is a key appointment within the Marine division, offering the opportunity to manage a well-established and diverse book of SME and mid-market marine cargo and freight risks, with premiums typically ranging from £2.5k to £100k. The role will have a mix focus on new business and renewals, while also supporting growth through broker engagement and market development.

As a senior member of the team, you’ll take ownership of your portfolio, exercising underwriting authority with confidence and sound commercial judgment. You’ll bring depth of expertise in marine cargo and freight, helping shape underwriting strategy, support junior underwriters, and play a hands-on role in driving both profitability and service excellence.

To be considered, you'll need significant experience in marine cargo and/or freight underwriting, ideally with exposure to mid-market and more complex risks. A solid understanding of marine clauses, logistics, and global supply chain exposures is essential, as is the ability to operate confidently within your underwriting authority. You’ll also bring strong broker-facing skills, a collaborative mindset, and a proven track record of underwriting profitable business in a fast-paced, commercial environment.

This is a great opportunity to join a well-respected and forward-thinking insurer that values technical expertise, encourages innovation, and supports professional growth. If you're looking for a senior position where you can make real impact, both commercially and strategically, we’d love to hear from you.

In return, you’ll receive a competitive salary, annual bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package. Full support is also available if you wish to pursue or complete professional insurance qualifications.
