Job description

The Advocacy Division at the Competition Commission South Africa (“Commission”) is responsible for promoting competition through non-enforcement means. It focuses on ensuring a pro-competition legislative, policy, and regulatory environment, promoting awareness of compliance with the Competition Act, and resolving competition concerns through non-enforcement means.

The Competition Commission seeks to appoint a progressively experienced Senior Analyst in the Advocacy Division to contribute meaningfully to advancing the Commission’s objectives through impactful policy and legislative analysis, and the resolution of complex competition matters. This role is suited to individuals who have progressed beyond foundational technical functions, are able to operate independently, manage complexity, and provide strategic input across multidisciplinary teams. It requires a consistent, detail-oriented, adaptable, and self-driven individual with demonstrated depth in policy research, advocacy, and economic or legal analysis. The position offers exposure to advanced issues in competition law, policy-making, and regulatory economics.

A starting annual total cost to company package of R 1227388,98 (negotiable, commensurate with experience).

Please note this position is available on a five-year fixed-term contract, renewable.

Key Responsibilities :

The main responsibilities of the incumbent will include, inter alia:

  1. Provide guidance to and supervise Analysts, Junior Analysts, and Cadets (Graduates) in the Division regarding research, advocacy projects, and investigations.
  2. Identify research activities and priorities relevant to the development of competition policy.
  3. Oversee, coordinate, and conduct advocacy research and projects to support the Competition Commission’s objectives.
  4. Oversee, coordinate, and conduct analysis of regulatory and policy issues arising and make recommendations.
  5. Oversee, coordinate, and conduct investigations regarding possible contraventions of the Act and supervise teams towards the resolution of competition cases through advocacy and/or referral to other divisions.
  6. Assist in identifying training and development needs of staff members.
  7. Act as a representative of the Commission within the framework of the Competition Act when communicating with business, consumers, employer/employee representatives, and other government agencies.
  8. Contribute to the development and implementation of the Competition Commission’s Strategic Plan, Annual Performance Plan, and the Division’s Business Plan.
  9. Contribute to the efficient administration of the Division through compliance with protocols, procedures, and systems, including knowledge management.
