Job description

Senior Accountant required for a reputable accounting firm based in East London, Eastern Cape.

Requirements:

  • BCom degree or equivalent work experience
  • Completed articles (advantageous)
  • Experience with Caseware, Vanilla Payroll, Pastel, Xero (advantageous)
  • Excellent communication skills in English, Afrikaans, or Xhosa (advantageous)

Responsibilities:

  1. Supervise and initiate processing of client information, including cheques, receipts, sales invoices, and purchase invoices
  2. Perform bank reconciliations
  3. Process and reconcile Petty Cash and cash control accounts
  4. Maintain a fixed asset register
  5. Prepare general journals such as depreciation, provisions, salaries, stock adjustments, etc.
  6. Record journal entries for new agreements, interest, provisions, accruals, and bad debts
  7. Handle foreign exchange transactions
  8. Reconcile debtors and creditors statements
  9. Ensure correct accounting treatment for asset disposals and investments; calculate capital gains/losses for tax purposes
  10. Analyze trial balances for errors and discuss findings with clients
  11. Perform analytical reviews of financial statements, including GP%, inventory days, creditors and debtors days
  12. Record books from insufficient records when necessary
  13. Prepare draft financial statements and working papers for various entity types
  14. Draft notes to financial statements and formulate accounting policies
  15. Identify provisions and contingent liabilities
  16. Calculate tax liabilities for different entity types and specific payments like lump sums on retirement
  17. Handle non-resident tax, withholding tax, and payroll taxes (PAYE, UIF, SDL, VAT)
  18. Complete statutory returns and liaise with clients regarding payments
  19. Prepare payroll and issue IRP5s and IT3s, reconcile to EMP501
  20. Reconcile input/output VAT and prepare monthly management accounts
  21. Identify internal control shortcomings and advise clients
  22. Account for loans related to related parties
  23. Set up accounting systems for clients
