Job Description
As our Section Manager Planning, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Safety, Health, and Environment
- Select and allocate resources for safe work.
- Consider environmental factors and minimise adverse impacts.
- Oversee safety management system elements and comply as appropriate.
- Ensure critical controls are functioning.
- Implement and maintain safety standards.
- Promptly investigate all incidents.
- Ensure subordinates are competent for safe task facilitation.
- Active participation in VFLs, Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions (when applicable).
- Authority:
- Stop unsafe work in any area – not just in your area. We are safety leaders.
- Issue safety-related instructions to any employees or contractors at the workplace.
- Initiate action, including training, against subordinates and contractors for their role in unsafe behaviour.
- Technical Directive
- Align equipment maintenance strategy with production profile.
- Improve engineering discipline by providing quality work and feedback to the maintenance management system.
- Proactively manage production risks.
- Ensure quality control/assurance in routine testing and contractor management.
- Authority:
- Review progress against the plan and make changes and adjustments accordingly.
- Assign tasks to subordinates in line with achieving the agreed production plan.
- Monitor and optimise work schedules.
- Assign tasks to supervisors to meet required tasks and reporting.
- Stop or redirect work that is not being executed according to quality standards or is not being solved by the shift supervisor if needed.
- Engineering and Maintenance Planning
- Contribute to and implement maintenance plans for heavy mobile equipment/plant facilities.
- Coordinate maintenance activities to align with production schedules and project timelines.
- Optimize resource utilisation to ensure timely completion of maintenance projects.
- Monitor inventory levels of spare parts and consumables to support maintenance activities.
- Oversee the management of heavy mobile equipment and plant assets.
- Collaborate with reliability engineers to analyse equipment performance and failure data.
- Work closely with the Section Manager on Work Management Planning to balance and maintain the AAOM framework/model fundamentals and the practicalities of making the Planning process deliver value to the organisation.
- Refine and simplify the Planning Best Practice Principles (BPPs) on-site from Kumba’s perspective and as a contribution to Anglo-American best practices in maintenance planning and execution.
- Coach and mentor the intended audience without expecting the audience or maintenance teams to possess complete content knowledge and focus on practical understanding.
- Ensure that all document changes and training/coaching material follow the E&M standards on document control.
- People and Teams
- Communicate effectively with team members, provide information, listen actively, and respond to feedback.
- Establish clear expectations and goals, ensure everyone works towards the same objectives, and track progress over time.
- Handle changes to the plan effectively, minimise disruption, and keep everyone focused on the end goal.
- Monitor performance and promptly address any issues or roadblocks, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary changes.
- Enforce rules and standards of behaviour and address performance or conduct issues.
- Provide training to team members and offer on-the-job training, mentorship, and other forms of development.
- Identify staffing needs and ensure the right people are in the right roles to support team objectives.
- Manage the talent pool, identify high-performing employees, develop retention plans, and recruit or develop employees with the necessary skills and experience.
- Authority:
- Share information at appropriate forums.
- Introduce change following business needs.
- Prescribe critical tasks and measure performance.
- Enforce discipline to ensure conditions conducive to work.
- Develop or ensure the development of role requirements.
- Select and appoint staff to role requirements.
- Budget and Cost Control Management
- Ensure compliance with the budget for the area of responsibility.
- Evaluate and approve cost impacts in the area of responsibility and revise the budget accordingly.
- Identify, communicate, and execute potential cost-reduction initiatives.
- Authority:
- Generate authorisation for expenditures.
- Revise the budget after receiving appropriate authorisations.
- Take necessary action to correct misallocations.
This role is in Engineering & Maintenance (ENG) department on a band 6.12 level reporting to the Manager Engineering & Maintenance.
Qualifications
- Relevant Degree in Engineering (Relevant to Reliability Engineering and Asset Management) / Equivalent (NQF7)
- SA Drivers License Code B
Technical Knowledge
- Advanced knowledge of engineering and maintenance principles, standards, and procedures, gained through 6-8 years of experience, including 3 years in a supervisory/management position.
- Adept at classifying operational processes based on the Operating Model, focusing on Work Management.
- Well-versed in project management fundamentals, including planning, execution, monitoring, and control.
- Experienced in utilising business improvement tools and techniques to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Possess sound business insight and understanding of commercial drivers of site performance.
- Familiar with basic financial metrics and budgeting tools, including cost analysis, forecasting, and resource allocation.
- Skilled in applying risk management techniques and identifying critical controls to mitigate potential hazards and minimise operational risks.
- Well-versed in safety, health, and environmental standards and regulations, including legislative and statutory requirements.
