Job summary

Valterra Platinum Limited seeks a Section Engineer (Band 6) for Borwa Mine to provide operation support to the Resident Engineer with a 1-year planning horizon. The role focuses on safe movement of people and ore, maintenance planning and asset management across the operational area.

The candidate will drive safety culture, oversee adherence to standards, manage budgets, and ensure legal compliance while coordinating major shutdowns and project work to meet production targets.

Qualifications

• Experience in underground mechanised mining operations is advantageous.
• Strong safety leadership and risk management capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Create a safety culture through productive, authorized systems and risk controls.
• Ensure safe movement of people, ore and materials in shafts and plants.
• Apply Asset Management Framework and Valterra Technical Standards.
• Develop and manage section budgets with 1–5 year horizon.
• Manage major shutdowns, replacements and rebuilds.
• Drive projects within area, delivering on time and budget.
• Ensure legal compliance of sections and processes.
• Monitor critical asset performance to meet production targets.
• Maintain infrastructure to prevent indirect production risks.
• Coordinate logistics of machinery and equipment in operations.
• Oversee construction, installation, commissioning and maintenance of equipment.
• Lead and supervise staff and contractors in area of responsibility.
• Draft section strategy and regular reports on KPIs and progress.

Job Description

Location of position: Borwa, Mototolo Mine

The Section Engineer is a 2.13.1/2.13.3.1 or 2.14.1 and 2.13.12 appointment in terms of the MHS Act (in Mining Operations) or in terms of the OHS (in Process Operations) and is responsible to provide operational service to the Resident Engineer, with a 1-year planning horizon. The role ensures effective and safe movement of men, ore and material in the vertical/decline/horizontal shaft/haulage/plant and the associated maintenance and construction linked to the Operational Area of responsibility.

Responsibilities:

• Create a safety culture through productive and authorized operational systems/processes that allow all employees (including contracting partners) to provide their outputs in a risk-controlled environment.


• Oversee consistent application of Safety & Health principles in all discipline interactions and take personal responsibility for safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.


• Application of the Asset Management Framework.


• Application of Valterra Platinum Technical Standards and their associated Critical Controls.


• Develop and manage the budget for their sections with a clear view of the required maintenance within a window of 1 to 5 years, through the development of Asset Management Plans (AMP’s), also known as Life of Physical Asset Plans (LOPAP’s).


• Manage major shutdowns, component replacements and rebuilds.


• Manage projects within their appointed area of responsibility, to be completed in full, on schedule and to budget.


• Ensure their sections are always legally compliant.


• Manage critical asset performance to ensure production outcomes are met according to business expectations


• Maintain infrastructure in a sustainable manner to ensure no indirect risks to production outcome.


• Manage effective logistics of machinery used to transport ore, waste, equipment or people.


• Manage the construction, erection, installation, commissioning, repairs and maintenance of all equipment in area of responsibility.

• Manage people appointed to supervise, control and operate all equipment in area of responsibility.


• Compile a strategy for the section within your area of responsibility, detailing improvement opportunities to improve equipment performance, reduce the cost of maintenance and improve safety.


• Compile appropriate and regular reports, detailing performance against the required engineering performance metrics as well as progress against strategy.

This role is at Band 6 level reporting to the Section Engineering Manager.

Qualifications

• Engineering related degree – BSC Engineering / Diploma


• Government Certificate of Competency

Experience

• 5 years of post-engineering qualification experience, of which 3 years in an appointed position (relevant to the role) will be advantageous


• Experience in underground mechanised mining environment will be advantageous

• Valid EB/Code 08 driver’s licence


• Medical fitness certificate
