Job description

To be responsible and accountable for all aspects of vessel maintenance and operation of propulsion engines, other engines, deck machinery, refrigeration, and sanitary equipment aboard the vessel by coordinating and directing subordinates while complying with statutory laws, company policies, and safety regulations, thereby ensuring maximum dredger availability.

Position Outputs
  1. Plan, compile, and control annual lay-up maintenance to ensure that expenditure remains within the parameters set by the fleet department.
  2. Train and develop cadet engineers and provide ongoing training for certificated engineers to enhance marine engineering skills and practices.
  3. Liaise with and control external contractors to ensure maintenance and repairs are carried out within set time frames and conform to specifications.
  4. Liaise with the maintenance manager to ensure that critical and other spares are available timely to optimize vessel utilization and production.
  5. Ensure compliance with international and local maritime laws and practices to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of the vessel and crew.
  6. Control the ordering and optimal consumption of fuel and lubricating oils to optimize vessel utilization and minimize expenditure.
  7. Plan and control preventative maintenance systems to ensure the problem-free operation of all machinery, minimizing downtime.
  8. Conduct regular inspections of machinery spaces to identify unsafe acts and correct them accordingly.
  9. Plan and organize the preparation of the vessel for sea, ensuring all safety measures regarding seaworthiness are intact.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Certificate of Competency as a Second Engineer Officer endorsed Chief Engineer (Port Operations) or Second Engineer.
  • At least 1 to 3 years' experience working as a second engineer.
Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge required includes the ability to interpret drawings, solve technical issues, and possess overall knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment, high and low voltage. Company policies such as OHS ACT, Marpol, Collision Regulations, SOLAS, Merchant Shipping Act, IMO regulations are essential.

Skills required include negotiation, communication, interpersonal skills, analytical ability, and computer literacy.

Additional Requirements
  • Driver's license code 8.
  • Willingness to travel as required by the business.
  • Trust and honesty in handling finances as per the National Credit Act Amendment 19.
