SCADA Engineer

Main purpose of position

Currently we are looking for a SCADA Engineer in Cape Town, South Africa to be part of our global team working together towards our vision – Improving our future. As our SCADA Engineer, you will take ownership of SCADA operation and function, ensuring smooth integration between sites, grid operators, and central monitoring office.

Main responsibilities

Support during the Structuring and Execution phase

1. Specify the minimum requirements and specifications related to the SCADA system and communication network
2. Conduct due diligence investigation on relevant technologies to ensure risks and opportunities are identified during the design phase
3. Identify all communication interfaces, IP lists, and protocols for the project and utility interfaces
4. Involved in SCADA hardware design reviews, technology selection, FAT, SAT, and site commissioning
5. Implement signals, analogues, alarm updates, and general configuration
6. Ensure correct implementation of the design
7. Grid Code Support - signal point to point testing and SCADA functionality testing for plants in construction and operations

Support during the Operations phase

1. Ensure correct implementation of the design and effective handover of SCADA, Communication designs, and documentation at TTO
2. Implement configurations and commissioning of SCADA equipment for plants in operation
3. Ensure SCADA hardware availability by troubleshooting and resolving SCADA and communication network issues and implement the latest updates
4. Implement technologies to continuously monitor communication devices and all critical secondary plant equipment
5. Update SCADA and communication as-built drawings to ensure alignment between site implementation and drawings
6. Implement signals, analogues, alarm updates and general configuration
7. Provide EPC with lessons learnt for future projects
8. Ensure the needed Cyber security requirements are aligned with the company requirements

Qualifications and competencies

1. B.Tech/B. Eng in Electrical Engineering
2. MCSE, N+, CCNA or relevant IT qualification advantageous
3. Minimum 5+ years’ relevant experience within the areas of Information Technology, Information Technology Systems or Industrial Electronics and Automation systems
4. Experience with implementing and running of SCADA
5. Sound ability to interpret technical diagram and drawings
6. Extensive work experience in the power generation and/or distribution environment
7. Sound IT and network knowledge
8. IT Infrastructure or operations management experience
9. Networking including IP and other protocols (DNP3, Modbus, Serial, IEC61850)

4. Travelling for certain periods (commissioning) may result in extended time on site (1 to 2 weeks)
