Job description

Position Overview:

To ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and site-specific requirements. The CHSO is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving construction health and safety standards across the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

Compliance & Legal Requirements:

  • Ensure adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) and Construction Regulations.
  • Maintain valid registration with SACPCMP as a CHSO.
  • Support compliance with client, legal, and company HSE requirements.

Safety Management:

  • Develop and implement project-specific safety plans and risk assessments (HIRA).
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and safety walks.
  • Enforce permit-to-work and safe working procedures.
  • Identify and control potential hazards on site.

Incident Management:

  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Report and record incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts.
  • Recommend corrective and preventive actions.

Training & Awareness:

Conduct toolbox talks, inductions, and safety briefings.

Ensure workers are competent and understand their safety responsibilities.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain up-to-date safety files and reports.
  • Submit daily, weekly, and monthly SHE reports to management.
  • Coordinate with principal contractors and client SHE teams.

Team Collaboration:

  • Support site supervisors and managers in implementing safety practices.
  • Participate in SHE meetings and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.

Minimum Requirements:

  • SACPCMP Registered as CHSO (Mandatory)
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a construction health and safety role
  • Grade 12 (Matric) and a recognized Health & Safety qualification (e.g., SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, NQF Level 5 or higher)
  • Sound knowledge of OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and environmental requirements
  • Strong report writing and communication skills
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and work independently
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel

Advantageous:

  • Experience in civil works, infrastructure, or large-scale projects
  • ISO 45001 exposure or internal auditing training
  • First Aid / Fire Fighting certification
  • Working knowledge of risk assessment software or safety apps (e.g., Safety Files, AuditSoft)
