Job summary

I&J Cape Town is seeking a Safety Officer to oversee Health, Safety and Environmental compliance for the Waterfront site and vessel fleet. The role focuses on maintaining the Safety Management System, ensuring legal compliance and supporting audits.

You will update safety files, conduct quayside inspections, and supervise contractor safety inductions while promoting a culture of safety across shorebase and vessels.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Matric with safety focus.
• National Diploma or Certificate in Safety Management.
• Formal Maritime Safety Management qualification – advantageous.
• SAMTRAC certification – advantageous.
• Willingness to work overtime and at sea.
• Standby duties may be required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and update the Vessel Safety Management System for shore base and vessels.
• Ensure Vessel Safety Registers are current at all times.
• Verify Legal Compliance Certificates and permits are in place; support audits.
• Assist with quayside safety, Marsh audit preparations, and vessel safety.
• Induct contractors on safety standards and ensure safety files are up to date.
• Document Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Permit to Work processes.
• Conduct regular quayside safety inspections and walkabouts; address findings.

Grow, Innovate, Succeed! We have an incredible opportunity for a SAFETY OFFICER at I&J in Waterfront, Cape Town. In this role you will need to ensure Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance for the site and its Vessel Fleet.

Reporting Structure:

Reports to: Safety and Utilities Manager

Key Areas of Impact:

Maintain the Vessel’s Safety Management System

• Regular updating of safety files for both shore base and vessels and ensuring accuracy there off.
• Ensure Vessel Safety Registers are up to date at all times.

Ensure Legal Compliance Certificates and permits are in place

• Support all internal and external audits.
• Assist with quayside safety which entails Marsh Audit preparations.
• Assist Vessel Safety Officer when needed.
• Attend department safety meetings.
• Ensure Good Housekeeping on the quayside at all times.
• Perform Ad-hoc and Bi-weekly Housekeeping walkabouts and ensure that findings are addressed timeously.

Conduct Quayside Safety Inspections and Walkabout and Internal Audits for Shorebase and Vessel Fleet

• Conduct regular walkabouts.
• Document each vessel’s inspection and report on findings.
• Monthly follow-ups on addressing findings and reporting on the progress.
• Ensure there is no outstanding findings for more than 6 months.

Safety Management of External Service Providers and Contractors

• Ensure Contractor Inductions are completed timeously.
• Ensure that all contractor's safety files are up to date before commencement of work.
• Conduct and document Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for various jobs on the vessels.
• Conduct Permit to Work Audits and ensure that the permits are completed correctly and provide training where necessary.
• Induct contractors on the I&J’s Safety Standards and Procedures, Policies and OHS Act and Regulations.
• Documented Job Safety Analysis (JSA) to ensure contractors are working safely at all times.
• Documented Permit Audits and address non-compliances immediately.

What It Takes to Succeed:

Experience that set you up for success:

• Minimum 1 - 2 years’ experience in a Safety Management role or working as a Safety Officer

Qualifications & Certifications that will contribute to your success:

• Grade 12 / Matric
• The ideal candidate will hold a National Diploma or Certificate in Safety Management
• Formal qualification in Maritime Safety Management – Advantageous

Additional Requirements that will enhance your impact for success:

• SAMTRAC Certificate – advantageous
• Work overtime and at sea when required
• Perform standby duties
