The successful candidate will ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, develop safety programs, and lead safety training initiatives. Job Title : Safety Manager – KZN – Mining
Reports to : Mining Manager
Overview :
The Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring the overall safety of all employees, visitors, and contractors within the mining operations in KwaZulu-Natal. This role requires a proactive and strategic approach to developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs and procedures to prevent workplace injuries and ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations.
Responsibilities :
Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs that comply with all relevant health and safety regulations and best practices
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and risks, and implement corrective actions as needed
Provide safety training to employees, contractors, and visitors to ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulations
Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses to determine root causes and implement preventative measures
Develop and maintain emergency response plans and coordinate emergency drills and exercises
Manage and monitor the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure proper PPE is worn at all times
Participate in safety committees, meetings, and inspections to promote a culture of safety within the organization
Liaise with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and local communities on safety-related matters
Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, mining, or a related field
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a safety management role within the mining industry
Knowledge of South African health and safety regulations, including the Mine Health and Safety Act
Professional certifications such as SAMTRAC, ISO 45001, or NEBOSH are preferred
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
Proven track record of developing and implementing safety programs that have resulted in improved safety performance
Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
Valid driver’s license
