Job summary

University of the Free State invites applications for a Researcher within the Ecological Engineering Institute of Africa (EEIA) on the Bloemfontein campus. The role focuses on biocomplexity pipelines for algae-based wastewater processing and bioremediation research, with teaching responsibilities in data-driven ecological engineering.

Requirements include a PhD in Microbiology/Biotechnology (NQF 10) or an equivalent Master’s at NQF 9 with doctoral progress. Strong publication record preferred.

Qualifications

• PhD or Master’s with related field required for appointment.
• Industrial experience in wastewater algae applications desired.
• Experience with microbial/viral population analysis, DNA/RNA techniques, microbiome libraries, and SEM.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and expand analytical biocomplexity pipeline for wastewater algae testbed.
• Explore bioremediation strategies via concrete 3D biofilters.
• Assist in obtaining research funding for EEIA.
• Advise on postgraduate Ecological Engineering projects.
• Teach Data-driven Ecological Engineering in PGDip program.
• Publish regularly and present at conferences.
