Job description

Job Purpose:

We are seeking a highly skilled R&D Manager responsible for technical project management of Research and Development, including non-recurring engineering projects for external customers. This role will support the Executive Manager of Engineering in operational management for executing internal R&D initiatives.

Key Technical Skills Required:

• Effective knowledge of project planning techniques and tools.
• Understanding of project lifecycle and output control techniques.
• Proficiency in tools such as Project Server and SharePoint.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to interpret R&D requirements and schedule design, development, integration, and testing phases.
• Familiarity with complex product manufacturing processes within an R&D setting.
• Application of Systems Engineering principles and Product Development Process.
• Budget creation and management expertise.
• Comprehensive knowledge of electronic engineering discipline requirements in an R&D environment.
• Ability to maintain a holistic project view while addressing detailed technical challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

1.Project Management:

• Manage internal research and technology activities in the Engineering department.
• Oversee R&D projects for external customers, collaborating with the Programmes and Bids department.
• Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
• Report project progress at monthly finance reviews.
• Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors for project execution.

2.General Management:

• Assist in compiling Product Roadmaps with relevant stakeholders.
• Manage the R&D budget and submit monthly reports to the Executive Manager: Engineering.
• Coordinate White Papers and Technical notes between Engineering and Marketing departments.
• Foster collaboration with universities and manage student vacation work.

3.Operational Management:

• Structure a suitable software development environment.
• Implement R&D development processes with Engineering managers.
• Manage workload distribution and priorities in the Engineering department.
• Maintain a skills matrix for all R&D engineers.
• Participate in recruitment and performance appraisals.
• Determine and coordinate technical and procedural training requirements.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Minimum BEng Electronic or Computer Engineering, preferably with formal project management training.
• Minimum 8 years, preferably 10 years, of experience in operational and technical project management within a high-technology R&D environment.
• Strong leadership experience.
