About the Role

Technical Research Analyst - Upstream Asset Valuation, Africa

The Team

With the world's most comprehensive primary data assets, S&P Global works closely with major energy companies globally. Our data and insights support risk management, business planning, investment decisions and a deeper understanding of global energy markets.

Within Energy, we enable organizations to create long-term, sustainable value through data, research and insights that provide a comprehensive view of global energy and commodity markets.

The Africa Upstream Asset Valuation team focuses on sourcing, researching, analysing and reporting production, cost, development and asset valuation information across the African upstream sector.

This role presents a great opportunity across research and analysis to join our dynamic team and contribute to the high-quality work we deliver. The successful candidate will contribute directly to the Upstream Asset Valuation team, while also supporting the broader research, content, analysis and insights produced by the Africa team.

Responsibilities and Impact

  • The primary responsibility of the Upstream Asset Valuation Research Analyst is to maintain, grow and enhance African upstream content within the relevant platforms. This is a hybrid technical and analytical role, combining knowledge and understanding of the upstream oil and gas industry with strong research, modelling and analytical capabilities.

  • You will develop expertise across assigned African markets and assets and will be responsible for producing asset valuations, production forecasts, cost estimates and other insights based on your research and analysis.

  • You will have the opportunity to demonstrate and further develop your client engagement skills, both internally and externally, while contributing to a broad range of research topics, analytical deliverables and client discussions.

  • As the energy industry evolves, the team is also expanding its knowledge and analysis of technologies and development concepts related to emissions reduction, operational efficiency, decarbonization and the integration of lower‑carbon and renewable energy solutions into oil and gas developments.

  • This position is critical in supporting customers who subscribe to the Upstream Valuation platform and wider Upstream Intelligence services, including international and national oil and gas companies, financial institutions, equipment and service providers, and other participants across the energy value chain.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct upstream asset evaluation and research across Africa, including reserves and resource assessment, production forecasting, field development planning, cost estimation and asset valuation.

  • Model the production, development and costs of oil and gas projects across the region, including conventional, unconventional and lower‑carbon developments where relevant.

  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of geologists, economists, engineers and research analysts.

  • Assess and incorporate risk and uncertainty into asset analysis and develop appropriate scenarios.

  • Conduct independent research, integrating external findings with internal datasets and technical knowledge to develop consistent, robust and insightful asset analysis.

  • Apply an understanding of regional market dynamics, operational considerations and upstream development concepts when evaluating assets and projects.

  • Monitor industry developments, company activity, project progress and other factors affecting upstream investment and development across African markets.

  • Work with large and complex datasets, ensuring consistency, accuracy and quality while extracting meaningful insights to support research and analysis.

  • Engage with clients and industry stakeholders, communicating technical concepts, assumptions, methodologies and analytical workflows in a clear and structured manner.

  • Contribute to the broader research, content and analytical insights produced by the Africa team.

  • Leverage evolving analytical and digital tools, including generative AI where appropriate, to enhance research, analysis and workflow efficiency.

What We're Looking For

This position requires a university degree in Petroleum Engineering, Engineering, Geology, Economics or another relevant discipline. Relevant industry experience will also be considered.

A minimum of two years of relevant experience and a good understanding of the upstream oil and gas industry are preferred. Experience working with or analysing African oil and gas markets will be considered an advantage.

The successful candidate will be fluent in English and comfortable engaging directly with industry contacts and clients to build relationships, gather information and develop market insights.

Fluency in French will be considered a significant advantage, particularly given the role's coverage of multiple African upstream markets. Additional languages relevant to the region will also be considered an advantage.

Hands‑on operational or field experience within the oil and gas industry will be highly advantageous, particularly experience that provides a practical understanding of upstream operations, field development, production, drilling or project execution.

Experience working with large and complex datasets, as well as familiarity with generative AI and other emerging digital tools used to support research, analysis and workflow efficiency, will also be highly beneficial.

Basic Required Qualifications

  • University degree in Petroleum Engineering, Engineering, Geology, Economics or a related discipline.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English.

  • Good understanding of the upstream oil and gas sector, including field development, production, cost estimation, midstream infrastructure and regulatory considerations.

  • Strong analytical and research capabilities.

  • Working knowledge of common spreadsheet, word‑processing and presentation software.

  • Ability to work with large and complex datasets and translate information into clear analytical insights.

  • Self‑motivated, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, with strong attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Comfortable engaging with internal and external stakeholders and communicating technical concepts clearly.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in French is highly desirable and will be considered a significant advantage.

  • Hands‑on field, operational or technical experience within the upstream oil and gas industry is highly advantageous.

  • Previous experience with an oil and gas operating or service company, or as an upstream researcher or analyst within a research or consulting organization.

  • Experience working with or analysing upstream assets and projects across Africa.

  • Strong experience working with large and complex datasets, including data analysis, validation, interpretation and quality assurance.

  • Experience using generative AI and other digital tools to support research, data analysis, content development and workflow efficiency will be considered a significant advantage.

  • Ability to critically evaluate field development plans and production performance, with a natural curiosity and willingness to challenge assumptions.

  • Ability to prioritize competing demands across research, content delivery, stakeholder requests and commercial activities.

  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with Power BI or similar data visualization and analytical tools would be advantageous.
