Job summary

Placements24 in Randburg, Gauteng, is seeking a Protection and Control Engineer to design, specify, and commission protection schemes for substations and power grids. You will perform fault calculations, relay settings, and field testing while maintaining strong client and site engineer coordination.

The ideal candidate has 6+ years in protection engineering, deep knowledge of protection philosophies, and proficiency with PSS/E/ETAP/DigSILENT.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Systems.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in power system protection and control engineering.
• In-depth knowledge of protection philosophies (e.g., overcurrent, distance, differential protection).
• Experience with digital relays from leading manufacturers (e.g., Siemens, GE, Schweitzer).
• Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, DigSILENT PowerFactory).
• Familiarity with substation automation standards like IEC 61850.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively in a remote setting.

Responsibilities

• Design and engineer protection and control schemes for substations and power systems.
• Specify protection relays, control panels, and associated equipment.
• Develop protection settings and logic based on system studies and requirements.
• Perform and review fault calculations and stability studies.
• Commission and test protection relays and control systems in the field or remotely.
• Develop logic diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams for protection and control circuits.
• Troubleshoot protection system malfunctions and implement corrective actions.
• Liaise with clients, project managers, and site engineers to ensure project objectives are met.
