Job summary

Placements24 seeks an experienced Electrical Protection and Control Engineer for its client in Klerksdorp, North West. You will design, test, and maintain protection schemes for substations and power lines, ensuring grid stability and safety.

The role demands deep knowledge of protection principles, relay settings, and SCADA integration, with a track record in field testing and commissioning. Travel to field sites in the North West is expected.

Qualifications

• B.Eng. or B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 7 years in electrical protection and control systems engineering.
• Knowledge of power system protection principles (overcurrent, distance, differential, voltage).
• Proficiency with protection relay settings software and testing equipment (Omicron, Megger).
• Experience with substation automation and SCADA systems.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and one-line diagrams.
• ECSA registration is advantageous.
• Willingness to travel to field sites in the North West.

Responsibilities

• Design, specify, and apply protection relays and schemes for transmission and distribution systems.
• Develop and maintain control system logic for substations, including SCADA integration.
• Perform fault analysis and coordinate protection settings for selective tripping and stability.
• Develop test procedures and oversee commissioning and field testing of protection and control equipment.
• Troubleshoot complex protection and control issues and review external vendor designs.
• Ensure compliance with IEC, IEEE, SANS and regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to protection philosophy and maintain documentation of settings and test reports.
• Stay updated on advancements in protection and control technology.
