Job description

Our leading reinsurance provider client is looking for a dynamic treaty reinsurance professional to join their high-performing team based in Cape Town.

In this role, you will take ownership of a reinsurance treaty book within a key geographical area, combining strategic market engagement with technical underwriting. You’ll build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients, drive growth and profitability, and ensure regulatory compliance across multiple markets. This is a client-facing and analytics-driven role, offering scope to influence portfolio strategy and mentor junior team members.

To succeed, you’ll bring at least 7 years of reinsurance underwriting and client management experience, a relevant numerate degree, and a passion for business development. Willingness to frequently travel internationally is essential (including over certain holiday period in SA).

  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree with a significant numerate component (actuarial / stats / mathematics / commerce)
  • At least 7 years of work experience in reinsurance underwriting and client management
  • Experience as a reinsurance senior broker will be considered
  • Solid Client and Business Development experience
  • Willingness to work over the Christmas and Easter Holiday period
  • Willingness to travel internationally

Advantageous Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience :

  • Fluency in an additional language spoken in Europe, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and / or India
  • Good understanding of reinsurance principles and concepts
  • An understanding of reinsurance wordings, reinsurance markets and the end-to-end analysis of a reinsurance submission.
  • A strong understanding of insurance and related risks
  • Reinsurance technical accounting knowledge

Job Responsibilities :

  • Developing, managing and maintaining a reinsurance treaty book in the chosen area. This is both a client-facing role and an analytics and accounting role in conjunction with the Pricing team
  • Building and maintaining reinsurance broker and client relationships for both existing business and potential business
  • Extensive market visits to the specific region
  • Detailed meeting capture and strategy development following market visits
  • Understand client objectives and reinsurance needs
  • Ensure that the business complies with all regulatory requirements for the respective countries
  • Drive profitability and growth in the chosen territory according to annual premium volume, profitability and volatility benchmarks
  • Understanding of contract wordings and able to negotiate on a granular level in compliance with internal guidelines
  • Checking and monitoring accounts, payments and profitability of the book
  • Preparing Underwriting Review for the Underwriting Committee
  • Review and manage endorsements and special acceptances
  • Claims review and approval
  • Capturing of information on the relevant system
  • Responsibility for the completeness of all required documents and adherence to the Underwriting Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintenance of internal Reports
  • Training and development of team members on areas of expertise and new industry-relevant topics
