Job description

Kongiwe is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to lead and manage Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for large-scale projects within the mineral resources and renewable energy sectors.

This role requires a balance between managing day-to-day environmental assessments and providing strategic guidance to ensure sustainable and responsible project development.

The ideal candidate will utilise their extensive experience to identify, assess, and mitigate environmental and social risks, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and promoting long-term environmental stewardship.

This position plays a critical role in both the operational and strategic environmental aspects of the company.

Location: Bryanston, Sandton, South Africa

Responsibilities
  1. Conducting ESIA projects within South Africa as well as internationally.
  2. Independently and proactively define and articulate environmental impacts.
  3. Consulting with Clients and Competent Authorities.
  4. Proven experience in managing and coordinating specialists and quality review of specialist reports.
  5. Tender and proposal compilation.
  6. Marketing and sourcing project leads.
  7. Lead and manage multi-disciplinary project teams to deliver complex ESIA projects from inception to completion, ensuring alignment with both environmental and social requirements.
  8. Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including local communities, regulatory authorities, and clients, ensuring effective communication and collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.
  9. Provide strategic input on environmental policies and strategies for clients, ensuring projects align with best practices in sustainability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.
  10. Identify, assess, and develop strategies for managing environmental, social, and economic risks across a diverse range of projects.
  11. Ensure that all environmental assessments comply with local, regional, and international environmental legislation, standards, and frameworks, including the South African National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), the IFC Performance Standards, and other relevant guidelines.
  12. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior EAPs and other project staff, fostering professional development and ensuring the delivery of high-quality work.
  13. Astute commercial and project management.
Qualifications and Experience
  1. Suitably relevant tertiary post-graduate qualification.
  2. 5-10 years' experience conducting ESIA projects both to South African regulatory requirements as well as internationally to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) requirements.
  3. International work experience (multilingual ability would be an advantage).
  4. Professional Registration (EAPASA and Pr.Sci.Nat).

  1. Ability to manage work flexibility in a consulting environment, balancing day-to-day tasks with strategic responsibilities.
  2. Valid driver's licence.
  3. Valid passport and willingness to travel.
  4. Experience in delivering project workstreams on time and within budget.
  5. Commercial and entrepreneurial acuity.
  6. Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent and efficient report writing.
  7. Environmental Compliance Auditing experience.
