SHAWCO Education is seeking UCT students for the role of Project Manager. This part-time position involves managing various educational projects aimed at supporting students in the Western Cape. Job description

Number : Looking for 6 to 8 UCT students

Reports to : SHAWCO Education Executive Team (President and Vice President)

Closing date : 23 : 55 on Sunday the 17th of October

SHAWCO is a studentrun volunteer society and a standalone Nonprofit Organisation (NPO). This duality allows SHAWCO Education the unique opportunity to engage in a variety of projects and programmes. The overall goal for SHAWCO Education is to help support students (high school and university) in as many ways as possible.

A SHAWCO Project Manager (PM) has an important dual role within SHAWCO Education. SHAWCO has the benefit of running as a UCT society and privately run NPO. Thus a PM helps the Executive Team (President and Vice President) execute the longterm goals of SHAWCO the organisation through projects run by SHAWCO the society. PMs will help run SHAWCOs various projects in teams of two. And all students who enter this role will be given the relevant training needed.

SHAWCOs Projects

Below is a list of current and potential projects SHAWCO will engage in. If you are chosen as a PM you could run one of these projects with another student / PM.

  • Mental Health Workshops for students and volunteers
  • Matric support Initiative (MSI) which is SHAWCO provided support for Matric students. For example mentor and mentee programmes
  • SHAWCO Digital Literacy SHAWCOs programme to help improve the computer literacy levels of students
  • SHAWCO Reading Programme a short project run in Hout Bay to help students enjoy reading
  • SHAWCO Bank a longterm drive to ensure volunteers (UCT Students) receive the full benefits of being a SHAWCO volunteer

As a member of the Senior Leadership a Project Manager will :

  • Receive insight and directions from SHAWCOs Board through the Executive team the will help SHAWCO achieve its short medium and longterm goals.
  • Provide feedback and insight on the future plans and direction of SHAWCO
  • Attending meetings to help plan for SHAWCOs various projects
  • Attending meetings to plan for SHAWCO Education projects and programmes
  • Collecting then summarising all relevant information from the projects SHAWCO runs. Then detailing this information to the Executive Team
  • Act as a point of guidance to SHAWCO volunteer
  • Opportunity to interact with a Nonprofit Organisation (NPO)
  • Get basic training in a variety of project management skills like; writing proposals interacting with external partners project financial planning or project monitoring and evaluations
  • Interactions with SHAWCO employees with years of corporate and NPO experience
  • The chance to network with the various 3rd parties SHAWCO engages with. For example Dell
  • UCT Plus hours. UCT Plus is an official way to get recognised volunteer hours.

  • Lastly the chance to meaningfully impact the future of SHAWCO. And by extension the lives of many people within the Western Cape

Requirements

  • Be a UCT student in the year 2022
  • Have a good academic standing
  • Be comfortable voicing your opinions about SHAWCO Education
  • Have a desire to want to constantly learn and improve in regards to your SHAWCO work
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to cooperate in a team
  • Ability to interact with SHAWCO volunteers online

Time Commitments

  • Attending weekly or monthly sessions for your respective projects 2 hours)
  • Biweekly SL meetings 1 hour)
  • Meetings to debrief discuss and plan for the future of your respective project 1 hours per week)
  • Helping to create edit or interact with SHAWCO related documents for example project / programme board reports. 1 hours per week)

In total a PM will need to engage with 5 hours of SHAWCO work per week
