Job summary

A leading healthcare recruitment firm is seeking a Project Manager to manage operational activities for the Wits Planetary Health Research unit in Johannesburg. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree, at least 2 years of relevant experience, and strong budgeting and team coordination skills. This role entails developing project implementation plans and ensuring compliance with organizational standards. Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups as per the Employment Equity Act.

Division : Wits Planetary Health Research

Main purpose of the job :

  • To manage and coordinate the operational activities of the unit and ensure project effectiveness

Location :

  • Parktown, Johannesburg

Key performance areas :

  • Developing implementation plans for the delivery of key project activities and outputs
  • Ensuring that P2P and EPMV are compliant
  • Monitoring budgets for all Wits PHR projects
  • Updating budgets as recommended by management
  • Developing budgets for new grant applications
  • Working with Legal and Finance to finalise contracts
  • Coordinating and liaising with relevant collaborators, project partners, beneficiaries, and stakeholders for effective project delivery
  • Overseeing and conducting due diligence on supplier documents
  • Assisting in audits and monitoring visits by regulatory authorities or sponsors
  • Procurement of equipment and instruments
  • Ensuring health and safety procedures are followed
  • Sending monthly progress reports to the Principal Investigator and chairing weekly management meetings
  • Managing staffing requirements and administration
  • Supervising subordinate staff to ensure optimal utilization and sound labor relations
  • Facilitating performance development and assessments
  • Addressing substandard performance and taking corrective actions
  • Coaching and training staff to acquire necessary skills

Required minimum education and training :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Business Management, or Business Science

Required minimum work experience :

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience
  • Procurement and compliance experience required

Desirable additional qualifications and skills :

  • Experience with donor-funded grants
  • Proven budgeting, financial, and grant management reporting skills
  • Interdisciplinary problem-solving approach
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in coordinating interdisciplinary teams
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Training in project management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to organize scientific activities
