Job description

Responsibilities:

  1. To ensure that daily shift management is done according to the required standard.
  2. To oversee the duties of the Security Officers at posts and the Reaction Teams on duty.
  3. Authorized to conduct searches of vehicles and containers on company property in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act (51 / 1977 / 24), Minerals and Explosives Act, and in conjunction with company policy and procedures.
  4. Authorized to arrest suspects on company property in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act (51 / 1977 / 42(3)) and in conjunction with company policy and procedures.
  5. Ensure that all communication, instructions, procedures, and policies are forwarded, discussed, and understood by all Security Officers and Reaction Teams.
  6. Communicate all security-related problems identified by the Security Officers and Reaction Teams to the Contract Manager.
  7. Report all incidents that occurred the following morning and serious incidents immediately to the Contract Manager.
  8. Ensure that all members attend the parade before commencing duty.
  9. Ensure that the following is checked at the parade before contractor guard force members are posted:
    1. All are sober and fit for duty.
    2. All are neatly dressed in the correct uniform.
    3. All are in possession of the correct PPE (Bullet-proof vest, safety shoes, etc).
    4. All are in possession of the relevant documents and badges (appointment certificate, PSIRA badge/card, aids badge, etc.).
    5. All are clean shaven and hair neat.
    6. All are equipped with all equipment required for the post that will be manned (radio, torch, etc.).
  10. Ensure that all security and safety-related matters are conveyed to all members at the parade before the guard force members are posted.
  11. Ensure all posts are filled, as per contract agreement.
  12. Ensure that all Security Officers and Reaction Team members are qualified and competent to conduct their duties.
  13. Conduct at least 5 Post visits at different posts during the month.
  14. Conduct inspection of the guard house during your visit, check registers, OB, equipment and the knowledge of the guard posted, ensure that a Post Checklist is completed.
  15. Conduct PTOs on Security Officers posted and conduct training where needed.
  16. Report any irregularities to the Contract Manager and any defects to the Control Room.
  17. Conduct alcohol tests when required or instructed.
  18. Ensure all Task Descriptions, Procedures and Instructions are acknowledged at every post by every Security Officer working at the post.
  19. Ensure that regular searches are done at Phola Plant.
  20. Continues Risk assessments must be done (including recommendations) at all posts and reports must be made to the client for review and implementation of recommendations (if agreed on).
  21. Ensure that at least two Alarm Rehearsals are conducted during the month with the Reaction Team.
  22. Ensure inspection of the Reaction Teams are done to ensure they have all required equipment and tools.
  23. Patrol unmanned areas on a regular basis, e.g. cables, substations, etc.
  24. Suspicious looking mine employees or other persons must be confronted and inspected. Enquire about their actions or activities.
  25. All persons committing crimes as per Scheduled Offences, Criminal Procedures Act and Explosive Act must be arrested.
  26. Report the incident to the Contract Manager and follow his instructions.
  27. Detain the arrested persons until they are handed over to the SAPS.
  28. Hand all exhibits over to the Protection Officer and ensure it is logged/recorded.
  29. All crime scenes must be investigated by the Assistant Contract Manager with assistance from the Tactical Team. An assessment must be done, and preventative measures must be implemented.
  30. Remember not to disturb evidence like fingerprints, tracks, etc. on the scene of the crime.
  31. Report sub-standard acts or conditions found on the mine.
  32. Encourage your members to do the same and inspect their areas of responsibility to determine if they do report.
  33. Hand completed irregularity reports to the Contract Manager after preventative action has been taken.
  34. Ensure that your members get the information on follow-up action taken on their reports.
  35. Carry out all instructions given by the Contract Manager, Assistant Contract Manager. Report back timelessly on instructions carried out, close the loop, and give feedback.
  36. Ensure that instructions given to subordinates are adhered to; if not, take necessary action.
  37. Ensure that all Safety, Health and Environmental rules and policies are always adhered to by you and all guard force members as per the contract.
  38. Ensure that you and the guard force members understand all emergency procedures.
  39. In the event of any emergency, the appropriate emergency procedure must be adopted and adhered to as per all Emergency Procedures as taught to you.
  40. Contact the Contract Manager without delay if you are unsure of what to do or what action to take.
  41. Cultivate informers so that information can be obtained about criminal activities.

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain the Guard track system (Downloading batons, add clock points, printing reports).
  2. Compile data for Vehicle and Pedestrian searches.
  3. Compile data for 100% Alcohol tests.
  4. Maintain employee files.
  5. Bookings of medicals and Induction, etc.
  6. Alarm system Audit.
  7. Transformers and cables Audit.
  8. Property markings done at stores Audit.
  9. Responsible for Control Room.

Preferred qualifications / attributes / skills:

  1. PSIRA certification Grade A.
  2. Relevant experience as a Contract Manager or similar position would be advantageous.
  3. Gold and illegal mining and investigations and intelligence experience.
  4. Firearm competency for handgun and rifle.
  5. Risk analyzing skills would be advantageous.
  6. Bilingual (English and any other South African Language).
  7. The ability to communicate and present at all levels.
  8. Working knowledge of MS Office.
  9. The ability to work under pressure.
  10. Willing to work long hours.
  11. Clean disciplinary, criminal and credit record.
