The University of Johannesburg invites applications for a senior academic position in the Institute for AI Systems. The appointee will teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise research students, and lead research projects within the AI discipline.

Responsibilities include advancing teaching with technology-enhanced methods, conducting high-impact research, and contributing to administrative duties while fostering national and international collaborations.

Formación

• PhD in Engineering or equivalent is required.
• Master of Engineering or equivalent is required.
• BEng or equivalent is required.
• At least 10 years of industrial and/or academic experience.
• Registered with ECSA or eligible to be registered.
• Evidence of research growth potential and leadership experience.

Job Description:

In addition to lecturing and supervising students of different levels (undergraduate, postgraduate, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels), the appointee will be expected to take part in community engagement efforts, be involved in other institute activities and conduct and supervise research as a part of a Research Group in the Institute for AI systems.

Responsibilities:

• Lecturing at under- and postgraduate level in the broad discipline of Artificial Intelligence.
• Supervision of students and research projects at postgraduate level.
• Engaging in the scholarship of teaching and learning, using innovative teaching practices and a blended learning approach including the utilisation of technology assisted teaching, learning and assessment practices.
• Conducting and supervision of a Research, including supervision of postgraduate students on a Master’s and Doctoral level and postdoctoral research fellows in the broad discipline of Artificial Intelligence.
• Conducting leading research producing recognised research outputs (ISI-/IBSS-listed journals, book chapters, books, reputed conference articles etc).
• Actively participating in administration tasks of the institute including but not limited to administration related to teaching, supervision, research and community engagement initiatives.
• Be actively involved in national and global collaboration opportunities, both research and teaching and learning initiatives.
• Advance the broad discipline of Artificial Intelligence through industrial engagement, community engagement and active participation in voluntary associations / professional societies.
• Through technical collaboration, using instruments such as contracted or sponsored research, attract funded external projects and/or funding for the existing programme set.

Desired Experience & Qualification

• A PhD (NQF 10) in an appropriate field of Engineering or equivalent degree.
• A Masters’ degree in Engineering (MEng, NQF 9) in an appropriate field of Engineering or equivalent degree.
• Bachelor of Engineering (BEng, NQF level 8) in an appropriate field of Engineering or equivalent degree.
• A minimum of 10 years' industrial and/or academic experience.
• Registered Professional Engineer, Candidate Professional Engineer or eligible to be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
• Documented proof of own industrial and/or academic research and strong evidence of research growth potential.
• Track record of demonstrated leadership experience.
• Broad AI disciplinary knowledge, skills and competencies.

Recommendations:

• Noteworthy career in the AI/4IR Technologies or Higher Education institution.
• Relevant evidence of discipline advancement and / or community engagement projects.
• Teaching and research experience in a Higher Education institution.
• Evidence of research outputs and strong research profile.
• Proven track record of postgraduate supervision at Master’s and Doctoral level.
• Currently NRF-rated, or on track to be rated in the next one (1) to (2) years.
• Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning, innovative teaching and research techniques incorporating technology.
• Research specialization that articulates well with the existing interest of the Institute.
• External research funding as primary investigator.
