REPORTS TO

Section Manager or any other person appointed to supervise him/her from time to time.

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing professional services on projects within the Power & Energy Functional group, including leading, design management and design delivery for projects medium/large projects for Building Services, Power Reticulation (Electrification), Distribution Substations, Streetlighting, Urban Energy, Water Treatment Works, Pumpstations, Solar Design, Asset Management and Master Planning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make good decisions on own initiative

  • Good software tool understanding, works alone with minimum supervision whilst producing tool deliverables

  • Able to organise information well and communicate design intent through software tool output. e.g. structure a drawing correctly and communicate design intent through drawing using CAD

  • Understands the principles of the design process and how design is translated into deliverables using software tools.

  • Understands the key project issues and how these influence their individual work

  • Taking ownership and responsibility for their own work and completing it to time and cost

  • Trains technicians and junior staff in relevant software tools

  • Supervises and checks the work of other team members

  • Develops increased design ability and quality

  • Drafts technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality

  • Able to present / represent their technical work

  • Able to draft responses to straightforward bids – assistance sought with commercial aspects

  • Develop knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management

  • Successful in identifying and following through on leads associated with additional work prospects on the projects they are involved with

  • Regular clients contact under direction of more senior manager

  • Ability to check and inspect constructed works for compliance with design and specifications

  • Undertakes monitoring and proposes remedial actions

  • Understand and implement local functional business technologies and markets

  • Direct and manage project development from beginning to end

  • Develop project scope and deliverables that support client business goals in collaboration with all stakeholders

  • Develop full-scale project plans and associated communications documents

  • Effectively communicate project expectations to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion

  • Liaise with project stakeholders on an on-going basis

  • Estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve project goals

  • Determine and assess need for additional staff and/or consultants and make the appropriate recruitments

  • Set and continually manage project expectations with team members and other stakeholders

  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel

  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the project team

  • Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path

  • Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools

  • Track project milestones and deliverables

  • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations

  • Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans

  • Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise project team members and contractors and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work

  • Build, develop and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the project

  • Conduct project postmortems and create a recommendations report to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements

  • Proactive approach in developing work or being aware of what projects are likely to come up from key clients

  • Submission of Expression of Interest (EOIs) and proposals on behalf of SMEC & its partners

  • Develop and maintain internal contacts within SMEC South Africa to source appropriate skills

  • Directly responsible for a project budget to the value of R8m

  • Directly responsible for recognising revenue to the value of R5m

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  • Overseeing and delivery of design standards

  • Quality and timeliness of reporting and other deliverables such as drawings

  • Planning of workload to meet deadlines

  • Knowledge and implementation of SMEC’s systems and procedures

  • Reporting to meet project and internal requirements

  • Management client satisfaction through project delivery

  • Manage & report project finance

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree/ B Tech degree in Electrical / Power Engineering from accredited university/college

  • Professional Registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineering or Technologist (Pr Tech Eng)

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience

  • Specialist knowledge of streetlighting / road lighting design software tools e.g. Relux, DIALux will be advantageous

  • Specialist knowledge of power distribution for reticulation and substations for urban development

  • Specialist knowledge of building services for utility buildings and commercial buildings

  • Experience in water treatment plant electrical design will be advantageous

  • Experience in solar systems design using software tools PVSyst, Homer, Helios, will be advantageous

  • Experience in using power distribution design software tools e.g DilSilent, Etap, AutoCAD, Revit, MicroStation will be advantageous.

  • Ability to effectively write reports

  • Professional delivery and appearance to ensure SMEC image is maintained

  • Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations

  • Co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment
