Job description

A chemical company in Blackheath, Cape Town has an entry level management opportunity available for a Production Manager ready to join at an entry level into management.
As Production Manager, you'll be involved with the planning, coordination and supervising of the manufacturing processes. You'll make sure goods and services are produced efficiently and that the correct amount is produced at the right cost and level of quality.
Responsibilities:

  • Take some operational responsibility
  • Involved in the pre-production (planning) stage as well as the production (control and supervision) stage.
  • Full responsibility for the production process, drawing up a production schedule;
  • Decide what resources are required;
  • Draft a timescale for the job;
  • Estimate costs and set the quality standards;
  • Monitor the production processes (SOP's) and adjust schedules as needed;
  • Be responsible for the selection and maintenance of equipment, manage the maintenance technicians;
  • Monitor product standards and implement quality-control programs;
  • Ensure that health and safety guidelines are followed;
  • Liaise among different departments, e.g. managers, dispatch, procurement;

People Liaison & Management:

  • Work with other internal managers/supervisors to implement the company's policies and goals;
  • A large part of the job is effective people management. Previous staff management experience is essential, staff motivation, hands-on training. Must be approachable and have an open door policy for all employees.
  • Supervise and motivate a team of workers; the team is very diverse and demands somebody who will demonstrate managerial qualities and authority, while maintaining the ability to play your part as a member of a team. Be personable.
  • Review worker performance and work closely with HR to resolve issues;
  • Identify training needs.
  • General HR functions, timesheets, discipline etc.

Skills required:

  • Administrative and people skills = NB!!
  • Planning and organisation skills to be able run and monitor the production process;
  • The ability to act decisively and solve staff or equipment-related problems, previous exposure to the technical side of factory management a strong recommendation;
  • The capacity to grasp concepts easily;
  • Computer literacy: Sage Evolution, Excel spreadsheets, Word reports etc.;
  • Attention to detail to ensure high levels of quality;
  • The ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with your team, managers, suppliers and the executive;
  • Strong negotiation skills for getting materials or maintenance parts within budget and at the right time;
  • The ability to work under pressure and motivate others to meet tight deadlines;
  • The ability to work in a logical, systematic and structured manner.

Requirements:

Suitably qualified with solid manufacturing experience in a similar role.
Good understanding of maintenance machinery, preventative maintenance, breakdowns.
Understanding of quality standards and health & safety regulations
Knowledge of performance evaluation and budgeting concepts
Experience in reporting on key production metrics.
Proficient in MS Office
Outstanding communication ability, written, verbal and listening.
Excellent organizational and leaderships skills. Ability to multitask and deal with a number of issues at the same time.
Attention to detail.
Strong decision-making skills and a results-driven approach.
