Job description

Main purpose of the job: To lead Health Economic evaluation and econometric research, and to lecture in the Masters in Public Health (MPH) Programme and supervise students (Masters and PhD candidates).

Location: Wits School of Public Health, Parktown, Johannesburg.

About the Role: An opening exists for an energetic researcher who will be a crucial member of the PRICELESS team and will manage research using large datasets to evaluate the impact of existing or possible health policy interventions in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. The role will require strong communication skills, familiarity with applied economics and program evaluation research methods, familiarity with data manipulation and management, strong econometric and statistical training, and familiarity with statistical software packages (i.e. STATA and R).

Key performance areas:

  1. Identify novel research methods and ideas.
  2. Attract research funding by identifying and applying for research grants in line with PRICELESS research strategy.
  3. Publish research in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, reports and present findings to stakeholders, the PRICELESS team and other groups.
  4. Manage research projects from inception to completion.
  5. Manage and mentor junior researchers.
  6. Teach on the Wits Masters in Public Health (MPH) Programme, and other courses from time to time, and supervise students (Masters and PhD candidates).
  7. Uphold the values of PRICELESS.

Required minimum education and training: PhD in Health Economics, 4 years post-doc experience.

Required minimum work experience: Minimum four years working experience in a research environment.

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

  1. Experience in decision analytical modelling.
  2. Published articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  3. Strong writing and presentation skills.
  4. Good conceptualisation skills.
  5. Experience in teaching and student supervision.
  6. Attention to detail.
  7. Flexible and adaptive with a positive approach to taking on several duties.
  8. Able to work independently and as part of a team.
