Procurement Officer

Star Merchant has an exciting opportunity available for Procurement Officers to be based in Umhlanga, Durban.

The successful incumbents will be responsible for procuring a wide range of commodities, including all special purchasing within the manufacturing and retail businesses, to meet the company's operational needs.

This role will involve negotiating with suppliers, managing procurement processes, ensuring products and services are sourced correctly with the appropriate specifications, and delivered on time to ensure continuity of supply from local and international suppliers.

The successful candidates will comply with all internal controls, policies, and procedures, avoiding conflicts of interest and unethical practices such as bribery or kickbacks.

Minimum Requirements

• 3 - 5 years' experience within a procurement or purchasing related role.
• Ability to analyse market trends and negotiate favourable terms with suppliers.
• Must have a Valid South African driver's license.
• Advantageous: Degree / diploma in Supply Chain.
• Knowledge of international procurement, customs regulations, and logistics.

Responsibilities

• Source and procure branded merchandise, IT equipment, uniforms, and items with custom artwork according to company specifications and branding guidelines.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, manufacturers, and suppliers of branded items, ensuring they meet quality, cost, and delivery expectations.
• Coordinate with stakeholders to understand specific requirements.
• Oversee quality control to ensure items meet standards.
• Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery timelines with suppliers.
• Manage procurement for international suppliers, including sourcing, negotiations, contracts, and compliance with trade regulations.
• Monitor global market trends and adjust strategies accordingly.
• Coordinate logistics and international shipping for timely and cost-efficient delivery.
• Prepare and process purchase orders, follow up on deliveries, and resolve supply issues.
• Maintain communication with accounting for payments and deliveries.
• Ensure proper documentation for customer orders.
• Research new components and suppliers for innovation and cost savings.
• Oversee national rollouts, events, and promotional projects.
• Ensure international purchases meet quality, cost, and delivery standards.
• Liaise with customs and shipping companies to resolve import/export issues.
• Develop strategic relationships with key suppliers to ensure quality and supply continuity.
• Evaluate vendor performance regularly and renegotiate contracts as needed.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and propose strategies.
• Prepare procurement reports on spending, performance, and trends.
• Ensure compliance with policies, legal, and industry regulations.
• Manage BEE-compliant suppliers according to company strategy.

People and Compliance

• Track performance and set up review meetings with Line Manager.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, legal, and industry standards.
• Maintain records for audits and investigations.
• Declare gifts and conflicts of interest appropriately.
