Job summary

The South African Breweries is seeking a Processing Plant Artisan to ensure the optimal running of the pilot malting plant and micro-brewery. You will perform in-process checks, record waste, and monitor process performance to sustain target quality and efficiency.

Responsibilities include maintenance, housekeeping, safety compliance, and assisting fellow team members. Experience in malting/brewing is advantageous but not mandatory, with a valid driver’s license and PC literacy required.

Qualifications

  • N4 Electrical/Millwright qualification is required.
  • PC literacy is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Brewing/malting experience is advantageous but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the micro-brewery and pilot malting plant according to work instructions.
  • Perform in-process quality checks and analyses as described in quality control procedures.
  • Record waste on documents or information systems and review trends.
  • Review process performance against targets and complete short-interval control documentation.
  • Respond rapidly to triggers causing stoppages.
  • Follow problem-solving work practices to resolve issues.
  • Carry out housekeeping tasks and apply 5S principles; observe safe work practices.
  • Identify and correct unsafe work practices and assist team members.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and participate in maintenance/ cleaning days.
  • Monitor maintenance trends and address deviations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve quality/production problems using proper techniques.

Job description

The processing plant artisan’s key functions will be to ensure the optimal running of the pilot malting plant and micro-brewery. Reducing breakdowns and perform preventive maintenance. This individual will be responsible for operation of the various production areas and in process checks. This individual will work closely with the processing plant operator.

Operational requirements:
  • Operating the process area according to the work instructions and adhering to usage standards (Operation of micro-brewery & pilot malting plant).
  • Carrying out the required quality checks as described in the quality control and analysis work practice (In process analyses and brewery quality analyses).
  • Recording waste on the appropriate documentation or information systems and reviewing waste trends to identify problems or opportunities timeously.
  • Constantly reviewing process performance against target and completing all short interval control documentation.
  • Responding rapidly to upstream or downstream triggers that result in stoppages.
  • Appropriate problem-solving approaches, as detailed in the problem-solving work practice must be followed.
  • Performing housekeeping tasks, applying 5s principles and following safe work practices.
  • Unsafe work practices must be identified and corrected.
  • Assisting fellow team members in the execution of their tasks.
Maintenance of Plant and Equipment:
  • Carrying out routine maintenance activities according to the maintenance schedule.
  • Taking part in maintenance and cleaning days.
  • Monitoring trends when conducting routine maintenance.
  • Where production does not meet quality standards the process artisan must try to identify and resolve problems using the appropriate techniques.
Problem Solving:
  • Continuous Improvement Using run/control charts and trend analysis, to identify sources of waste and variation in the process.
Technical Knowledge & Skills:
  • Demonstrated and proven technical knowledge of electrical standards and be able to read electrical schematic drawings.
  • Minimum N4 Electrical/Millwright
  • PC literacy
  • Valid driver's license
  • Malting and brewing experience would be an advantage but not required.
  • Prior experience in a Process Control Environment would be an advantage but not required.
